1 Synthesis characterization and crystal structure of transition metal complexes with Schiff base ligands derived from 2 hydroxy 1 naphthaldehyde and investigation of their spectral electrochemical antibacterial and magnetic properties 2 X ray Crystallography Farzaneh Fadaee f fadaeetirani@ch iut ac ir Date of Submission 2013 06 08 Department of Chemistry Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree Ph D Language Farsi Supervisor Mehdi Amirnasr amirnasr@cc iut ac ir Supervisor Kurt Schenk kurt schenk@epfl ch Abstract This thesis has been written and prepared in two distinc sections In the first section in the beginning of the project two series of cobalt III complexes with two pentadentate Schiff base ligands derived from hydroxy naphthaldehyde that have difference in a methylene group in the amine moiety of Schiff base and varied ancillary ligands have been synthesized CoIII naph 2dien pprdn BPh4 1 CoIII naph 2dien prldn BPh4 2 CoIII naph 2dien py BPh4 3 CoIII naph 2dien N MeIm BPh4 4 CoIII naph 2dpt pprdn BPh4 5 CoIII naph 2dpt 3 Mepy BPh4 6 CoIII naph 2dpt bzlan BPh4 7 CoIII naph 2dien N3 8 CoIII naph 2dpt N3 9 These complexes have been characterized and investigated by elemental analyses IR UV Vis H NMR spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry The crystal structures of and have been determined by X ray diffraction The crystal structure determination of showed intrinsically interesting phenomenon of polymorphism The redox potentials of the central cobalt ion showed a relatively good correlation with the donor ability of the ancillary ligands The spectroscopic and electrochemical properties of these complexes are also in uenced by the mutual steric hindrance between the pentadentate Schiff base and the ancillary ligands The in vitro antibacterial activities of the synthesized complexes have been also evaluated against two gram positive bacteries Staphylococcus aureus and Bacilluslicheniformis It was evident that and have stronger activities than those of the standard antibiotic Penicillin In continuation of this work complexes of copper II cobalt III manganese III and iron III with three tetradentate Schiff base ligands derived from hydroxy naphthaldehyde that have difference in the amine moiety of Schiff base and azide or thiocynate as an ancillary ligand have been synthesized MnIII NAPPDN N3 H2O 11 Cu2 NAPPR 1 1 N3 2 n 10 MnIII NAPPDN NCS 12 Na CoIII NAPPDN 1 1 N3 2 n 13 PDF created with pdfFactory trial version www pdffactory com
