The Effect of Salinity stress on Growth yield and Essential oil content of Mint genotypes Kamran Ghanbari k ghanbari228@gmail com Septamber 2013 Department of Agronomy and Plant Breeding Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Jamshid Razmjoo Krazmjoo@cc iut ac ir Abstract Salinity is a major limiting factor for crop production therefore this study was conducted to determine the effect of sanity on mint genotypes in Isfahan Iran during the spring 2012 A pot experiment was laid out using a factorial arrangment in a completely randomized design with three replications Treatments were four salinity levels including 0 control 25 low salinity 50 intermediate salinity and 75 severe salinity mM of NaCl and eight genotypes Isfahan Karaj Hamadan Ahvaz Ghazvin Kabutar abad Tabas and Kermanshah Plant hieght the number of leaves per plant leaf area per plant plant dry weight leaf chlorophyll content carotenoid content relative water content RWC proline and essential oil contents were measured Plant height the number of leaves per plant leaf area per plant shoot and root dry weight leaf chlorophyll and carotenoid contents RWC and essential oil contents were decreased while proline content was increased under increasing salinity conditions The highest essential oil content 1 21 was achived at 25 mM of NaCl and the lowest one 0 69 was noted at 75 mM of NaCl There were significant diffrences among mint genotypes in terms of plant hieght the number of leaves per plant leaf area per plant plant dry and fresh weight leaf chlorophyll content proline and essential oil contents The highest and the lowest of plant hieght was noted in Esfahan and Hamadan respectively The highest and the lowest of carotenoid nontent was noted in Esfahan and Karaj respectively The highest of fresh and dry weight was obtained in Ahvaz and the lowest value was in Kermanshah The highest of leaf number was noted in Kabutarabad and the lowest was obtain in Hamadan The highest of proline content was obtained in Hamadan and the lowest value was in Tabas The most and the least of total chlorophyll content was achived in Esfahan and Kraraj respectively The highest 1 77 and lowest 0 51 essential oil contents were also recorded in Tabas and Karaj respectively There were significant interaction effects between salinity level and genotype on total leaf chlorophyll content carotenoid content plant fresh and dry weight leaf area the number of leaves per plant The highest total chlorophyll and carotenoid contents were obtained in Esfahan under control condition and the lowest total chlorophyll and carotenoid contents were obtained in Karaj under severe salinity condition The highest number of leaves was noted in Esfahan and Kabutarabad under control and the lowest value obtained in Karaj under 75 mM of NaCl The highest leaf area was noted in Ahvaz under control and the lowest value was obtained in Kermanshah under 75 mM of salinity The highest fresh and dry weight was also obtained in Ahvaz under control condition and the lowest one was achived in Kermanshah under severe salinity The results suggest that the effect of salinity on mint genotypes was genotpye dependent Under control 0 mM low 25 mM intermediate 50 mM and high salinity level 75 mM Tabas Ahvaz Tabas and Ahvaz respectively had the highest value of growth and essential oil content and could be recommended for cultivation in stress and non stress environments Key words Mint Salinity Proline Oil Chlorophill PDF created with pdfFactory trial version www pdffactory com
