Abstract Because of industrial and urban development many hazardous organic substances are discharged into the environment Environmental pollution due to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons PAHs is one of the current environmental concerns Presence of petroleum hydrocarbons PHCs in soils is not only an adverse factor for human health but also a negative impetus for plant growth Several studies showed that PAHs can effect plant growth Many factors like the initial soil PAH concentration microbial population soil physical and chemical properties and physiological characteristics affect plant growth under polluted conditions Since excavation of contaminated soil is an expensive process the in situ stabilization of organic pollutants in soils has received increasing attention in recent years Adsorption of pollutants on suitable amendments is a mechanism that can control the adverse effects of hydrocarbons on plant growth Soil amendment with some adsorbents such as natural clays modified clays and activated carbon is a promising technique for the remediation of soils contaminated by hydrocarbons In this study the use of low cost and environmental freindly amendments in association with plant inoculated with P indica have been investigated for remediation of a hydrocarbon contaminated soil Sampling was done from hydrocarbon polluted soil from Bakhtiar Dasht Isfahan Iran Three soil amendments natural bentonite cationic surfactant modified bentonite and activated carbon were applied at and g kg to the polluted soil and incubated for and days After incubation for days the hydrocarbon concentrations were gravimetrically determined and corn was grown in pots containing the untreated and amended soils The plant yield was determined after months growth In order to define the effect of plants on hydrocarbon remediation the hydrocarbon concentrations were gravimetrically determined after plant harvesting The results showed that application of soil amendments significantly decreased the amount of hydrocarbons in the soil in both doses and g kg soil for all amendments Natural bentonite modified bentonite and activated carbon adsorbed as much as and mg kg of hydrocarbons in the polluted soil after incubation for 50 days at 80 g kg adsorbent dose respectively Activated carbon indicated the most reducing effect on pollutant concentrations All amendments applied at g kg soil were as effective as the amendments applied at g kg soil The significant decrease of hydrocarbon concentrations can represent the sorption of hydrocarbons onto the amendments added The effect of applied amendments on reducing hydrocarbon amounts in soil were also confirmed by corn yield A significant increment in plant s yield was observed for the amended soils Plants yield was increased in all adsorbnet treated soils as compared to the untreated soil Also with increasing duration of incubation time hydrocarbon remediation significantly increased Remediation of hydrocarbon in activated carbon natural bentonite and modified bentonite amended soils increased with increasing of incubation time by and respectively Plant inoculated with P indica didn t show any effect on hydrocarbon remediation but increased plant yield These findings can be considered encouraging for the use of this amendments especially natural bentonite and activated carbon as sorbents for the hydrocarbons removal from contaminated soils Key words Hydrocarbons Bentonite Modifies bentonite Activated carbon Inoculation Sorption PDF created with pdfFactory trial version www pdffactory com
