Abstract Keeping corn silage in the plastic bags as bagged silage is a new method which has some advantages as compared to common silo Some advantages of this method include easy storage and transport of the bags more nutritional quality and less product losses Manually placing chopped corn in the bags is very labor intensive costly and time consuming process Therefore developing a machine that can be able to produce the bagged silage automatically would be beneficial To design such a machine some of the product characteristics such as internal and external coefficients of friction angle of repose and compression force are needed to determine For this purpose the newly harvested corn silage was prepared and tested The compression test was performed using a universal testing machine with constant loading rate Considering the results of previous research for compressing silage in silos the final bulk densities of the bagged silage were considered between 600 and 800 kg m 3 Faborode O Dgorty Moze and Sitkeie s models were fitted with the measured values of pressure versus density changes during the compression test Due to higher R2 and lower error Faborode model was selected as the best model The device and its parts were designed based on system requirements and principles of engineering in order to operate properly In this project the most important design consideration were 1 project costs and being economic 2 simplicity of the design and 3 being user friendly The machine was consisted of four parts 1 hopper 2 helix for transferring product into the bag 3 chamber bag with pressure plate and belt brake The dimensions of the hopper and the outlet gate were designed according to angle of internal friction angle of external friction angle of repose for maize silage and using the model proposed by Jenike 1974 The helix was designed according to bag dimensions The fabricated machine was evaluated Theoretical power consumption of the device was calculated using Rehkugler model and brake belt formulas and compare with measured corresponding value The results showed that machine worked properly so that the density of corn silage in bags was 700 kg m 3 and power consumption was 25 percent higher than theoretical power The machine capacity was 1 62 tons per hour The total cost of production per kg of bag silage was equal to 394 Rials Keywords Angle of repose Compression force Corn silage Plastic bag Rehkugler model PDF created with pdfFactory trial version www pdffactory com
