Costal area classification Using high resolution satellite imagery case study Sirri Island Hadi Bahari Email address hadibahari2011@yahoo com Date of submission 2013 09 15 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Dr Alireza Soffianian Email address soffianian@cc iut ac ir Dr Nasrollah Mahboobi Soofiani Email address nsoofiani@gmail com Abstract Ecosystem is made up aquatic and terrestrial components in turn form biosphere Aquatic ecosystem covers up to seventy percent of earth surface Marine ecosystem accounts for the highest valuable biodiversity with diverse and sustainable habitats among others Coral islands are found to be one of the most important aquatic ecosystem compared to others because of unique characteristic rareness high diversity and advantages that they provide for costal residents Nowadays they are subjected to different destructive factors and it is expected that about 11 percent of these productive and diverse habitats are about to degradation Exact spatial data serve as a prerequisite to make better decision for coastal areas Remote sensing is one of the appropriate tools to study and recognize coral reefs habitats Although advanced satellite images have been developed in early 1980s for marine investigations however there are some limitations on features classification while using advanced satellite images The present research was aimed to evaluate potential of remote sensing data to classify bed features in coral habitats located at Sieri Island in Persian Gulf For this the present study has used Quickbird satellite images to classify bed features in six classes through evaluation of suitable pre processing methods including atmosphere correction water column and surface It involves data and spectra of mass corals dispersed corals dense algae dispersed algae sands and depth water The results indicated 14 2 improvement in bed classification after conducting pre processing operations 73 5 compared to raw images 59 3 in least distance classification method Some band ratios methods of PCA Crosta HSV Ls Fit and MNF were used to identification of three algae sand and corals to optimized selection of test samples change detectin by satellite Landsat 5 from 1985 to 2000 implies to decreasing trend of mass corals bed while increasing trend of dense alga and sand accordingly Results indicated optimized potential of satellite images in corals habitat investigations Keywords satellite images coral reefs pre processing classification change detectin PDF created with pdfFactory trial version www pdffactory com
