Evaluation of the bearing capacity of shallow footing on reinforced soil slope and investigation of scale effect on it Milad Torabi Miladt66@yahoo com Date of Submission April 7 2013 Department of Civil Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisors Dr Mahmoud Vafaeian mahmood@cc iut ac ir Dr Mohammadali Rowshanzamir mohamali@cc iut ac ir Abstract One way to improve the behavior of the footing placed on the sloping fill is to reinforce the soil slope by means of geosynthetics As a result of adding these reinforcement elements to the soil the bearing capacity of soil slope increases and the soil settlement of the foundation ground decreases On the other hand the accomplished activities related to the soil slope have been restricted In addition lack of employment of scale rules in the majority of carried out experimental studies in the realm of reinforced soil structures is evident The present study has explored the bearing capacity located on the reinforced soil slope and the effect of scale on the reaction of the reinforced soil In this regard bearing capacity experiments in small scales have been conducted on the soil slope reinforced by geotextile with minor strength and the impact of factors such as the depth to the top layer vertical spacing of layers number of layers and tensile strength of the reinforced layers on the behavior of bearing capacity and footing settlement placed on the soil slope have been examined Furthermore in order to investigate the effect of scale on the reaction of bearing capacity and the optimum quantities related to reinforced configuration the analytical software of finite element has been used it has been indicated that decreasing the distance of reinforced layer from footing causes the bearing capacity ratio to increase the soil settlement to decline and the failure surface to deepen An identical improvement of soil behavior has been observed in reduction of the distance between reinforced layers and improving the number of them Also increasing the strength of the reinforced layer has indicated that the bearing capacity and the ratio of bearing capacity will both increase and the more the tensile strength the less the increasing rate of them Therefore a critical quantity can be introduced to the tensile strength of the reinforced layer for each width of footing The employed particle image velocimetry method has indicated that the visual examination methods and revival of reinforced elements can be relatively used as a means of indicating the situation of the failure surface The numerical analyses revealed that the tensile module of the reinforced layer and the width of footing affect the optimum quantities of the distance between layers and the number of layers obtained from the small scale models only if the model boundary do not influence the results but they have no influence on the optimum depth of the first layer Key Words Bearing capacity reinforced soil slope small scaled model scale effect image processing PDF created with pdfFactory trial version www pdffactory com
