94Experimental Study on The Effects of Process Parameters in Incremental Forming on Thickness Variation of DC04 Metal Sheet Used in Automotive Body Using Artificial Neural Network Sadegh Davarpanah Varnosfaderani sdghdavarpanah@yahoo com September 26 2013 Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiAssoc Prof Mohsen Safavi mosafavi@cc iut ac irAbstractIn order to produce shell parts with different applications using the new method in sheet metal forming isinevitable The last decade has shown an increasing interest in a new class of forming processes known asIncremental Sheet Forming The name incremental forming is used for a variety of processes allcharacterized by the fact that at any time only a small part of the product is actually being formed and thatthe area of local deformation is moving over the entire product This de nition covers many processes starting with the traditional blacksmith s hammering and its mechanical counterpart the old forging hammerpress Also rolling can be regarded as an incremental process although not always recognized or accepted assuch A particular incremental sheet metal forming process used at large scale is spinning used for themanufacturing of rotational parts in low to medium large series like household cooking equipment Thisresearch focuses on what is now generally known as Incremental Sheet Forming ISF or AsymmetricIncremental Sheet Forming AISF Incremental sheet metal forming is known as a novel technology throughthe prototyping methods In this method sheets are formed to the desired shape without any die so the costsstrongly decrease Incremental forming has received the attention of the world in particular of theautomotive industry and that most proposed or suspected applications focus on the exibility offered by theprocess This process is divided into two categories single point incremental forming and two pointincremental forming In single point incremental forming sheets are clamped by blankholder and are formedto the desired shape by gradual and controlled moving of tool on the sheet A Computer Numerical Control CNC milling machine can be used to create the special tool path In this method because of clamping thesheet edge during the process there is no material flow to the forming area As a consequence the partthickness strongly decreases In this research based on a Toguchi Design of Experiment 25 experimentshave been done and effect of four process parameters included tool diameter axial pitch feed rate androtational speed on thickness variation of produced parts are studied experimentally Actually the TDoE isan important branch of experimental design particularly when several input variables potentially influencesome performance measure or quality characteristic of the product or process allowing a reduction of theexperiments number Also an artificial neural network model is developed to predict the thickness variationof the produced parts An NN can be considered as a black box since a designer can use it in a very simpleway without the complete knowledge of the existing relationships between input and output Keywords Incremental Forming Taguchi Design of Experiment Thickness Variation ArtificialNeural Network
