Variation and genetic parameters for some agronomic traits under two irrigation regimes Mohammad Ali Massoudi Masoudi mohammad87 yahoo com Date of Submission septamber 2013 Department of Agronomy and Plant Breeding Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisors Gh Saeidi Porf Supervisor G saeidi @cc iut ac ir Abstract Oilseed crops are economically and nutritionally important due to demands On the other hand water deficiency is one of the limiting factors of crop production including oilseed crops in most parts of the world Therefore this study was carried out to evaluate 28 native and 2 exotic safflower genotypes 30 genotypes under two irrigation regimes including irrigation based on 50 and 85 of soil moisture depletion at the Research Farm of Isfahan University of Technology The experimental design used in each irrigation regime was completely randomized block design with three replications The results showed that under normal moisture condition 50 soil moisture depletion there were significant differences among the genotypes for all measured traits except for grain weight per capitulum However under 85 of soil moisture depletion the genotypes showed significant differences for all of the traits The results of analysis of variance indicated that all measured traits except grain weight per capitulum were significantly affected by soil moisture content Also there was significant genotype moisture regime interaction for 1000 grain weight grain weight per capitulum grain yield per plant and seed oil content Correlation coefficients showed that under both irrigation regimes grain yield per plant was significantly correlated to plant height number of branches per plant grain weight per capitulum and 1000 grain weight Genetic and phenotypic coefficients of variations showed that there was remarkable phenotypic and genetic variation among the genotypes for important agronomic traits In addition under normal moisture condition the traits of branches per plant grain weight days to flowering day to maturity and leaf prolin content had higher broad sense heritability however at 85 of soil moisture depletion high broad sense heritability was estimated for grain yield per plant grain weight per capitulum seed oil content and chlorophyll content of a b Results of stepwise regression analysis for grain yield showed that under low irrigation regime the traits of number of capitula per plant 1000 grain weight branches per plant leaf prolin content and grains per capitulum were important respectively and totally contributed in 80 of grain yield variation Similarly under normal moisture condition the traits of capitula per plant 1000 kernels weight grains per capitulum and leaf prolin content were entered to model and accounted 79 of the grain yield variation Results of path coefficient analysis showed that under both soil moisture conditions capitula per plant had higher direct positive and also indirect effects through the other traits on grain yield Therefore under both irrigation conditions capitula per plant can be used as an appropriate selection criterion to improve grain yield in safflower breeding programs Cluster analysis classified the genotypes into four and three classes in normal and lower irrigation regimes respectively Correlation coefficients of tolerance and sensitivity indices SSI TOL MP GMP STI with grain yield in both irrigation regimes showed that STI was the most appropriate criterion to identify more tolerant genotypes and hence genotype of 2429E was recognized as the most tolerant genotype in this study Keywords Safflower Moisture regime Grain yield and components Drought stress tolerance PDF created with pdfFactory trial version www pdffactory com
