Determination of Optimum Operating Parameters in the Extraction Stage of Uranium from Aqueous Phase to Organic Phase TOA for Yellow Cake Production by using a Pilot Pulsed Packed Column Mostafa Fathalizadeh Najib m fathalizadeh n@gmail com September 22 2013 Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor S M Ghoreishi ghoreshi@cc iut ac irAbstract Pulsed packed column is one of the important equipment that is applied for liquid liquid extraction becauseof its high efficiency and low required space in nuclear pharmaceutical petrochemical and food industries Inthis project experiments were done on a pulsed packed column pilot plant In pulsed extraction columnsenergy is supplied via input mechanical pulses Input of pulses act as a mechanical mixer and also producedrops with smaller diameters which in turn increase the column efficiency Prominent features of pulsedextraction columns are as follows high efficiency in extraction simple design stable and reliable operation no moving parts and convenient operation with radioactive and corrosive solutions Considered variables inexperiments include flow rates of dispersed and continuous phases and frequency of pulses In this project leach liquor solution from Bandar Abbas yellow cake manufactury was used In many uranium mines suchas Gachin in Bandar Abbas sulfuric acid is used for leaching operation on ore after crushing operation Thisleach liquor containing uranium is extracted by specific extractant solvent like trioctyle amine TOA Thisoperation named Amex have been used for many years but for the first time in the current project thisprocess was carried out with pulsed packed column Experiments were performed in different operationalconditions including different frequency of pulses and different flow rates of dispersed and continuous phases According to the previous studies the optimum condition is volume percent of 4 for trioctyle amine inkerosene as diluent solution pH 1 and Qc Qd 1 In this optimum case 98 of extraction could be reached In the current project extraction of uranium using pulsed packed column in the above optimum condition wasinvestigated After each experiment and reaching steady state aqueous phase was sampled for analysis tomeasure Uranium extraction coefficient using valves No 1 4 7 on the active part of the column and the waste The photography from three different section of column was done to measure the d32 using a digital camera Diameter of droplets decrease from bottom to the top of column because of impact to packed and mass transferfrom continuous phase to dispersed phase This led to increase the hold up In extraction process leach liquorcontaining uranium is the continuous phase of pulse packed column and trioctyle amine solution is thedispersed phase of column Also studies on the effect of operating variables on the flooding and holdup of apulsed packed column are considered Holdup is one of the most important variables in the design of a pulsedextraction column The holdup is needed to calculate the interfacial area per unit volume and the absolutephase velocities Keywords Liquid Liquid Extraction Pulsed Packed Column Holdup Leach liquor Uranium TOA
