Detecting geothermal sources using ETM thermal infrared data in arid regions Case study South Khorasan Province Ferdows Kazem Tabaki Bajestani Email Address k tabaki@na iut ac ir September 17 2013 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Dr Sayed Jamaleddin Khajeddin khajedin@cc iut ac ir Abstract Fossil energy poses wide variety of environmental issues through imposing negative impacts onnatural resources in world At the same time it is unrenewable energy source and will run out in nearfuture Geothermal energy is a type of renewable one and which has excellent attributes likeunhazardous nature environmental friendly and low cost can meet some parts of current and futureenergy demands Desert in spite of people attitudes about which and all of its surficial unkindness andlow biomass production has great deal of potential diversity and if recognized and utilized properly itcan be used forward preventing desertification Due to having suitable climate and sunshine all overthe year higher windiness and geothermal potential most arid regions in Iran have paved the way toutilize and extend new and clean energy sources among others In the present research geothermalenergy in Ferdows County in southern Khorasan province was evaluated using ETM sensor data Number of forty soil samples were taken in randomized manner in 64000 h area at September 2012and transported to pedology lab in natural resource department of Isfahan University of technology andwere analyzed physiochemical Then samples were positioned on satellite images and all bands DNwere specified and their correlation to laboratory results were calculated in which there was nosignificant relation mostly due to inappropriate sampling Regions prone to hydrothermal alteration andlithological suitable position to supply geothermal energy were identified after exerting some primarysatellite images processing s using normal image processing algorithm including false color bandcomposition principle component analysis Crosta band ratio and least square fitting Surfacetemperature based on Thermal band of ETM was reconstructed through calculating area radiationpotential based on NDVI Then fault density layers and lithological formations in Ferdows area wereextracted using area geology map Given that land surface temperature layers lithological unites faultdensity hydroxyl and iron hydroxyl were valuated based on their weight in exploration trend Toevaluate this map accuracy volcanoes and spring in Ferdows were considered These area wereconsistent into geothermal evidences in area Given to high temperature in Ferdows spring 43 C it ispossible that Ferdows geothermal reservoir temperature is high based which Lindale graph canrepresent their role in improving arid area restoration and prevent natural resource destruction anddesertification Keywords Geothermal Desert potential ETM Land Surface Temperature Hydrothermal Alteration
