112 Asteragaletum fire danger mapping using ETM satellite data Case study Malayer s Rangelands Iran Fatemeh Hassan kaviar Email Address F hassankaviar@na iut ac ir 16 September 2013 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 24156 23111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Dr Sayed Jamaleddin Khajeddin khajedin@cc iut ac ir Supervisor Dr Saeid Pourmanafi spmanafi@yahoo com Abstract In recent years the increasing frequency of intentional fires in shrublands vegetation control andfire danger is essential Identification and mapping of fire danger areas are one of the main tools forachieving solutions to deal with fire in the sustainable range management One of the main hot spotsfor Fire in Hamedan province is vast Astragalus rangelands in Malayer city For this the present studyis aimed at mapping area prone to firing based on brush and shrub Astragalus vegetation map tomanage firing using ETM images so that managers might take some plans to Astragalus managementand conservation To mapping and planning such area exposed to fire can help stakeholders to alleviatedanger and deal with some conservation and management activities Images were undertaken togeometry correction using RMSe less than 0 1pixel Study area is located at Malayer city in south eastern of Hamedan province in the 70000 h area Fielded data were collected as per classifiedrandomized sampling method to image analysis so that the number of 10 plots was established within acircular area at 20 m radius within which plant cover percent was estimated Wide varieties of satellitedata processing analysis of mapping land uses were used including fusion process as per Broveyfiltering histogram adjustment principle component analysis NDVI index Tasseled Cap NDBI supervised and unsupervised classifications Finally land use map was prepared using hybridization integration of different layers and overlaying them As a result of aforementioned classification thenumber of 16 land use class was obtained with kappa of 0 75 as follows 1 iron mines 2 ironcontained lands 3 Agricultural lands 4 Vineyard Arbor 5 dry farming 6 fallow 7 residential andindustrial area 2 mountain 10 clay mines 11 transportation lines 12 stream 13 Forest Park 14 Disturbed lands 15 Shadow Rock 16 abandoned rangelands and dry farm lands Estimation model forthe Astragalus canopy cover was determined among data from plant cover percent using pixel valueslike stepwise regression Then the model was exerted on images and fire danger class s map wasobtained using reclassification The relationship between cover percent to plant indices and bands wereevaluated by multivariate linear regression The correlation between vegetation canopy cover to elevenindices were evaluated in which TVI index accounted for the highest correlation 0 76 followed byindices MND NDVI and SAVI among others Eventually 4 classes for fire danger in rangelands werederived too dangerous up to 35 Astragalus canopy cover moderate danger 15 35 low dagerous 5 15 and finally no dangerous area up to 0 5 canopy covers The obtained map was matched into areal burnt area in recent years since given to six years difference in sampling time about 70 ofoccurred fire events in a recent six years were falling into too and moderate danger areas Such area iscategorized in no danger area because there is no longer any Astragalus within the area The fieldstudy was conducted to determine the cause Malayer District rangeland fires arson is defined as 100 and the elimination of undesirable non palatable species spiny Astragalus happens dominant and theopening of space palatable species can be replaced Results indicated that ETM images are appropriateto prepare fire danger and land use map Keywords fire danger map Malayer classified randomized Astragalus satellite images ETM
