The effect of shade levels on Physiological Morphplogical characteristics and essential oil of Mint Hajar Raie Dehaghi 22 September 2013 Department of Agronomy and Plant Breeding Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor J Razmjoo Prof email address krazmjoo@cc iut ac ir Abstract Mint is one of the most important medicinal and aromatic plants in the world however the effects of shading levels on growth and quality of mint accessions has not been well documented Therefore the purpose of this experiment was to determine the effects of five shade levels 0 full sun 20 30 shade 40 50 shade 60 70 shade and 80 90 shade on nine mint genotypes Karaj Hamedan and Esfahan M longifolia Tabas Ghazvin and 7 1 M piperita 2 1 11 3 and Bojnord M spicata intensities A split plot desigyn with three replications was conducted during the 2012 2013 growing season Three rhizomes of each genotypes were planted in the pots and after full establishment pots were put under respective shade level at the Isfahan University of Technology Plant height shoot fresh and dry weights root fresh and dry weights number of leaves and number of steems per pot leaf area leaf total chlorophyll a and b and carotenoid contents essential oil content and yield were measured The results plant height shoot fresh weight root fresh and dry weight leaf chlorophyll a content carotenoid content essential oil and yield increased under 20 30 shading however number of leaves number of steem leaf area chlorophyll b content were the highest under control The highest and lowest plant heights were measured in 7 1 under 20 30 and in Ghazvin under 80 90 shades respectively The highest and lowest shoot numbers were noted in Esfahan under sun full and Hamedan under 80 90 shades respectively The highest and lowest number of leaves were noted in Hamedan under sun full and 80 90 shades respectively The highest and lowest leaf area were distinguished in Bojnord and Ghazvin respectively The highest and lowest shoot fresh weights were measured under 20 30 shade in Karaj and under 80 90 shade in Ghazvin respectively The highest and lowest shoot dry matters were detected in Esfahan under sun full shade and Hamedan under 80 90 shade respectively The highest and lowest root fresh weights were recorded for Karaj under 20 30 and Ghazvin under 80 90 shades respectively The highest and lowest root dry matters were measured for Karaj under 40 50 and Ghazvin under 80 90 shades respectively The highest and lowest chlorophyll a content were recorded in 2 1 and Bojnourd genotypes respectively The highest and lowest chlorophyle b were noted for Esfahan under sun full and Hamedan under 80 90 shade respectively The highest and lowest carotenoid content were cognizanced in Ghazvin under 20 30 shade and Bojnourd in 80 90 shade levels respectively The highest and lowest percent essential oil were recorded in Tabas under 20 30 and Karaj under 80 90 shade levels respectively The highest and lowest yield essential oil were registered in Esfahan under 20 30 and Karaj under 80 90 shade levels respectively Maximum and minimum essential oil percent were measured in 1 2 and Hamedan respectively According to results Tabas Esfahan Karaj 1 2 and 11 3 produced highest yield essential oil under sun full 20 30 40 50 60 70 and 80 90 shade levels respectively Key Word M longifolia M piperita M spicata percent essential oil yield essential oil PDF created with pdfFactory trial version www pdffactory com
