Evalution of Acaricidal Activities of the Selected Essential Oils from Several Lamiaceae Plants Against Tetranychus urticae Acari Tetranychidae Maryam Kaveh m kaveh@ag iut ac ir 10 December 2013 Department of Plant Protection Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisors Jahangir Khajehali Assist Prof Khajeali@cc iut ac ir Nafiseh Poorjavad Assist Prof npoorjavad@cc iut ac irAbstractThe two spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Acari Tetranychidae is an important pest of greenhouse vegetable and ornamental crops In this research fumigant and contact toxicity and repellent effect of tenessential oils from Lamiaceae plants were evaluated against T urticae Essential oils used in the researchconsist of Thymus daenensis Zataria multiflora Perovskia abrotanoides Mentha longifolia Menthapulegium Rosmarinus officinalis Satureia hortensis Salvia sahendica Mentha spicata and Mentha piperita The essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation using modified Clevenger type apparatus GC MSanalysis revealed that the main components of essential oils were thymol for T daenensis and Z multiflora menthol for P abrotanoides and M piperita pulegone for M longifolia and M pulegium verbenone forR officinalis carvacrol for S hortensis pinene for S sahendica and carvone for M spicata Fumiganttoxicity was evaluated against adult larva and egg of T urticae and contact toxicity was evaluated againstonly adults of T urticae A leaf dip method was used for contact bioassay The tested essential oils in contactbioassays had no phytotoxicity at concentrations less than 1600 ppm and low phytotoxicity at 1600 ppm Thelowest phytotoxicity was related Mentha piperita with 1 72 percent The LC50 values for fumigant toxicityinduced by different essential oils on adult larva and egg of T urticae were 1 21 4 32 and 7 17 l l air forT daenensis 1 15 4 79 and 11 94 l l air for Z multiflora 15 42 2 95 and 10 44 l l air for P abrotanoides 6 06 4 01 and 28 52 l l air for M longifolia 1 14 5 79 and 10 83 l l air for M pulegium 7 49 3 55 and 16 15 l l air for R officinalis 4 77 2 48 and 6 84 l l air for S hortensis 6 73 5 27 and15 69 l l air for S sahendica 0 95 4 25 and 6 29 l l air for M spicata and 0 78 5 16 and 8 59 l l air for M piperita respectively The LC50 values for contact toxicity induced by different essential oils were 619 43 mg l for T daenensis 419 44 mg l for Z multiflora 526 71 mg l for P abrotanoides 523 4mg l for M longifolia 454 44 mg l for M pulegium 530 71 mg l for R officinalis 636 02 mg l for S hortensis 602 13 mg l for S sahendica 503 mg l for M spicata and 425 42 mg l for M piperita Resultsof repellency assay revealed that at 10 ppm concentration between tested essential oils M piperita and M spicata had the highest repellency on T urticae adults and at 100 and 1000 ppm Z multiflora had the highestrepellency According to the results most tested lamiaceae plants revealed high acaricidal activities andrepellency effects and can be considered as appropriate alternatives to chemical pesticides Key WordsTetranychus urticae Fumigant toxicity Contact toxicity Repellency Phytotoxicity
