83 Evaluation of Chickpea Safflower Intercropping at Different Levels of Plant Density and Nitrogen Ehsan omidi Omidiehsan@yahoo com December 18 2013 Department of Agronomy and Plant Breeding College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan Iran 84156 83111Degree M Sc Language PersianSupervisor Morteza zahedi Assist Prof mzahedi@cc iut ac ir AbstractAn experiment was conducted in spring 2013 at the Agricultural Research Station of college ofagriculture Isfahan University of Technology in order to evaluate the intercropping of chickpeaand safflower with different plant denseties and nitrogen level Treatments were arranged as afactorial split plot experiment within a randomised complete block design with three replications Two nitrogen levels 30 and 60 kg ha 1 in the form of urea were allocated to main plots Fiveplanting arrangements pure cultures of each crop and three mixtures including 75 safflower 25 chickpea 50 safflower 50 chickpea and 25 safflower 75 chickpea and two plantdensities safflower 40 and 50 chickpea 33 and 44 plant m2 were accomodated in sub plots With an increase in plant density of safflower from 40 to 50 m2 plant height leaf area index andbiological yield of safflower were increased while the numbers of branches per plant number ofbuttons per plant number of grains per button and grain yield were decrased With an increase inplant density of chickpea from 33 to 44 m2 plant height was increased but the number of buttonsper plant and grain yield were decrased All measured traits of safflower were enhanced with anincrease in nitrogen level from 30 and 60 kg ha 1 With an increase in nitrogen level plant height ofchickpea was increased while the numbers of pods per plant and grain yield this crop weredecreased The effect of nitrogen level on the biological yield of chickpea was not significant Neither plant density nor nitrogen level had significant effects on grain weight of bothaccompanied crops The highest value for plant height of safflower was obtained in the pureculture of this crop but the highest values of leaf area index the number of branches per plant number of buttons per plant number of grains per button and grain and biological yield ofsafflower were observed in 25 safflower 75 chikpea intercropping Grain weight of safflowerwas not significantly affected by planting arrangement The highest values of plant height andgrain weight of chickpea were obtained in 50 safflower 50 chickpea intercropping while thehighest values of the number of pods per plant grain and biological yield of chickpea wereachieved in the pure culture of this crop Weeds dry weight was decreased with an increase in plantdensity but it was enhanced as nitrogen level was increased The highest value of weeds dryweight was obtained in the pure culture of chickpea and weeds dry weight was decreased as theratio of safflower in planting arrangement was increased so that the lowest weeds dry weight wasobserved in the pure culture of safflower The results from this experiment showed thatintercropping of chickpea with safflower can enhance land use and reduce weed and reduce weedcontamination compared to pure culture of chickpea Key words Row Intercropping chickpea safflower plant density planting arrangmentnitrogen land equivalent ratio weed control
