The Effects of Different Culture Media on Growth and Productivity of Greenhouse Bell Pepper Capsicum annuum L Zeynab Barzegar Z barzegar@ag iut ac ir 2013 12 16 Department of Horticulture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Prof Mostafa Mobli mobli@ag iut ac ir Abstract Due to some problems such as soil born pathogens lake of suitable soils shortage of fresh water for irrigation and better control on environmental factor cursing hydroponic methods for vegetable production is increasing in the world Generally hydroponic systems can be divided into two groups according to its media liquid media and aggregate substrate The second type is more common Besides their characteristics such as good draining high water holding capacity high ionic exchange and lack of weed growth pests and pathogens media should be also cheap accessibility of using saw dust and their combination with pumice and bentunite in soilless system as growing media and their effects on growth yield fruit quality and nutrient concentration of bell pepper Capsicum annuum L A greenhouse experiment was conducted using a randomized complete block design with eight treatments four replications and two plants in each replication Treatments growing media were consisted of saw dust 100 saw dust 95 pumice 5 saw dust 9 pumice 10 saw dust 85 pumice 15 Saw dust 95 bentunit 5 saw dust 90 bentunite 10 sawdust 85 bentunite 15 and a common planting bed 85 peat 15 perlite as a control Seedlings were transplanted at 3 true leaves into 7 litre volume pots filled with different substrates Water and nutrient requirements of the plants were supplied using Johnson nutrient solution 50 applied with a drip irrigation system Seven months after transplanting the following parameters were measured vegetative growth yield fruits quality The results showed that the highest fresh and dry weight of shoots root dry weight the earliest flowering and fruiting as well as color formation was recorded with saw dust 85 pumice 15 The results also demonstrated that after Peat the highest content of chlorophyll was recorded with saw dust 95 pumice 5 and then saw dust 90 bentunite 10 different media caused no significant effect on fruit number per plant fruit fresh weight and yield however saw dust 90 pumice 10 after peat caused the highest number of fruits per plants Also saw dust 85 pumice 15 after peat caused the highest yield as demonstrated no significant different with peat and pure saw dust The highest fruit length after peat was related to sawdust 95 pumice 5 and the lowest fruit length was recorded with pure saw dust The highest fruit diameter was recorded with saw dust 90 bentunite 10 but the lowest fruit diameter after peat was related to saw dust 85 bentunit 15 The highest fruit lobe was recorded with saw dust 90 pumice 10 and the lowest fruit lobe was observed with saw dust 85 bentunit 15 the results also showed that although the thickness of fruit pericarp non significantly was affected with media the highest was recorded with sawdust 90 bentunit 10 and the lowest was observed with saw dust 85 pumice 15 after peat also saw dust 90 bentunite caused the highest amount of vitamin C and TSS and saw dust 90 bentunit 10 caused the lowest amount of vitamin C besides the results showed that the highest level of K in leafs was recorded with saw dust 90 bentunit 10 and the highest level of Ca in the leafs was related to sawdust 95 pumice 5 Totally the results showed that after peat in the most cases the plants cultured in the medium containiy saw dust and pumice 15 showed the better vegetative and reproductive growth than the plants in pure saw dust and saw dust plus bentunit Key words Bell pepper cultivars Saw dust Growing substrate Bentuni Pumice
