58 Modification of Alumina Nanoparticles with BiocompatibleCompound Containing N trimellitylimido and Different Amino acids and Its Application for the Production of Novel Poly amide imide Nanocomposites Having 1 5 Naphthalene Diamine and Diacid Phenylalanine Moieties Elham Khadem Varnamkhasti khadem 77@yahoo com 2014 Department of Chemistry Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Prof Shadpour Mallakpour E mail mallak@cc iut ac ir mallak777@yahoo com mallakpour84@alumni ufl edu Abstract In this investigation Al2O3 nanoparticle hydrophilic surface was treated with couplingagent of dicarboxylic acids for compatibility with polymer matrix For this purpose at firsttrimellitic anhydride and L amino acids L phenylalanine L methionine L valine L alanine L leucine have been used for the preparation of optically active dicarboxylicacids Then nanoparticles NPs surface under ultrasonic irradiation conditions wascoupling by organic groups The resulting modified NPs were characterized by varioustechniques including Fourier transform infrared FT IR X ray diffraction XRD and theirmorphology were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy FE SEM and transmission electron microscopy TEM The FE SEM and TEM results indicated thatdue to fulfill steric hindrance between modified inorganic NPs prevent their aggregation The thermal properties of NPs were studied by TGA The TGA confirmed presence ofdicarboxylic acids on the nanoparticles surface In the next project a series of novelpoly amide imide PAI based on amino acid phenylalanine was synthesized In thisregard diacid phenylalanine DAF react with 1 5 naphthalene diamin via directpolycondensation by using triphenyl phosphite TPP and tetrabutylammonium bromide TBAB as catalyst and solvent under conventional heating in order to prepare thermallystable and optically active PAI The chemical structure of obtained PAI was confirmed byFT IR 1H NMR spectroscopy elemental analysis Then PAI Al2O3 nanocompositescontaining different amounts of modified Al2O3 NPs were synthesized under ultrasonicirradiation conditions The resulting nanocomposites were characterized by varioustechniques including FT IR XRD and their morphology were investigated by FE SEMand TEM The FE SEM and TEM results indicated that the modified NPs with DAF weredispersed homogenously in polymer matrix The thermal properties of nanocompositeswere studied by TGA TGA results confirmed that the heat stability of the prepared NP reinforced composites was improved compared to the pure polymer Keyword Optically active polymers Alumina nanoparticles Nanocomposite Ultrasonic irradiation Thermogravimetric analysis Green condition
