109 Template synthesis and characterization of Cu II Ni II and Hg II complexes with unsymmetrical schiff base ligands and investigation of catalytic effect of ion metal on hydrolysis and reorganization of imine bond Investigation of electrochemical behavior and antibacterial activity complexes Mona Majedi mona majedi@yahoo com Jan 14 2014 Department of Chemistry Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Prof M Amirnasr Email amirnasr@cc iut ac ir Abstract Schiff base ligands have been in the chemistry catalogue for over 150 years Their instant and enduring popularity undoubtedly stems from the ease with which they can be synthesized their puzzling versatility and wide ranging complexing ability once formed Schiff bases are generally bidentate tridentate tetradentate or polydentate ligands capable of forming very stable complexes with transition metals Schiff base metal complexes have been widely studied because they have industrial antifungal antibacterial anticancer antiviral and herbicidal applications Interest in the design synthesis and characterization of transition metal complexes of unsymmetrical Schiff base ligands stem from this fact that the central metal ions in natural systems are unsymmetrical Synthesis of such ligands is rather difficult compared to their symmetrical counterparts Moreover during the formation of metal complexes of unsymmetrical Schiff base ligands one of the major problems which is commonly encountered is hydrolysis which leads to rearrangements of the Schiff base On this basis in this thesis a new ligand 1 H 2napsal and its metal complexes which may have biochemical and electrochemical applications are synthesized characterized and studied 2 Cu napsal 3 Ni salnap 4 Ni nappyr 5 Cu napsal Hg SCN 2Cu napsal The interesting phenomena is the Schiff base hydrolysis at imine linkage in the complex of Ni salnap and reformation of Schiff base from the other end of amine Probably this phenomena is attributed to effect of metal ion The H2napsal and its complexes were characterized by UV Vis FT IR 1HNMR and Elemental Analysis The complexes 2 and 3 were structurally characterized by X Ray Diffraction The antibacterial properties of 1 2 and 3 were investigated and compared with the antibiotic penicillin Key Words 1 Unsymmetric Schiff base ligand 2 Metal complexes 3 Hydrolysis of Schiff base 4 Spectroscopic properties
