Extraction and Enrichment of Rhenium Compounds from Rhenium Chloride Solution in Water and Molybdenite Concentrate Solution in Aqua Regia using Emulsion Liquid Membrane Shahab Nazeri shahab nazerii@gmail com Date of Submission September 21 2013 Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Kayghobad Shams K shams@cc iut ac ir Abstract Rhenium is one of the rare and valuable elements in the earth s crust Applications of this precious metal in manufacture of various industrial products and commodities have attracted much attention in recent decades In particular because of the fact that the concentration of rhenium in ores is in orders of PPM or PPB exploration of high flux methodologies for enrichment and extraction of this engineering material from primary and secondary resources is of highly significant value for both academics and industry Currently several methods are used for the recovery of rhenium from molybdenite concentrate Among all available extraction methods for rhenium recovery the solvent extraction is still the most prevalent one Emulsion liquid membranes ELMs are means that can be utilized for extraction of species from highly diluted solutions In addition ELM is a technique by which one can accomplish both extraction and stripping in one step Therefore process intensification by integration of separation steps and high flux are the two major advantages of separation of chemical species using ELM technique Further emulsion liquid membranes have been used in separation processes because high flux of mass transfer and no equilibrium limitation One of the most important applications of this process is the extraction of heavy metals In this study batch extraction of rhenium ions laboratory scale from both dilute model media rhenium chloride in water and copper molybdenite concentrate solution copper molybdenite concentrate in aqua regia using emulsion liquid membrane ELM has been investigated The model media solution was prepared by dissolving analytical grade rhenium chloride in distilled water 10 PPM solution The real copper molybdenite concentrate solution was prepared by dissolving copper molybdenite concentrate from Sarcheshmeh Copper Co in aqua regia 20 PPM solution Rhenium is found in inorganic compounds such as molybdenite and copper and the concentration of rhenium in molybdenite concentrate of Sarcheshmeh Copper Co is reported to be about 700 900 PPM The materials used in this study include Span80 as a surfactant three alkyl amine TOA as the carrier kerosene as the membrane phase analytical hydrochloric acid as the internal phase and rhenium chloride salt solution and molybdenite concentrate solutions as feeds external phase In the extraction of rhenium ions by ELM method the process parameters namely speed of agitation surfactant concentration carrier concentration and contact time were studied It was revealed that the optimal conditions of the said parameters for maximum separation of rhenium ions from model media were 600rpm 2 v v 2 v v and 8minutes respectively Under these optimal conditions the extraction rate from model media solution was 99 8 In addition the effects of process parameters corresponding to molybdenite concentrate solution in aqua regia were investigated and the optimal conditions were found as follows speed of agitation 600rpm surfactant concentration 2 v v carrier concentration 2 v v contact time 10 minutes Under these conditions the extraction rate was about 98 It was concluded that the ELM method is an efficient high flux alternative enrichment method for the enrichment of rhenium compounds in copper molybdenite concentrate compared with conventional separation methods Key words Extraction Rhenium Emulsion liquid membrane molybdenite concentrate
