An Investigation on the Effect of Fineness and Crimp of Fibers and Porosity of Web on Charge Ability and Performance of Electrostatic Nonwoven Polypropylene Filter Media Alireza Ghasemian a ghasemian@tx iut ac ir Data of Submission January 18 2014 Department Of Textile Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 8415683111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Dr M Zarrebini Esfahani zarrebini@cc iut ac irDr H Tavanai tavanai@cc iut ac irAbstract Air pollution is among many hazardous problems that challenges mankind in areassuch as sanitation health and economy The root of pollution which causes healthproblems and even terminal diseases is mainly related to the level of industrialization ofthe any concern society Thus pollution control is vitally important There are varioussolutions that can be employed to control pollution but the most effective way toimplement this task is to prevent pollution of the environment Use of filter media and filtration systems form the most widely means of pollutioncontrol Generally textile fabrics are the most extensive materials used as filter media Historically woven fabrics have been used in dry and liquid filtration nonwoven fabricsand in particular needled fabrics due to their technical and economical advantages arebeing used extensively in dry filtration Versatility in manufacturing process andpossibility of electrical charging of the nonwovens provides an effective means forarresting most of contaminants The application of electric field forms the basis of what isknown as electrostatic filtration Electrostatic filtration media encompass a broad class ofmaterials that are capable of capturing and retaining airborne particulates throughelectrostatic interactions The electrostatic interactions are the direct result of the electricfields generated by the presence of either uncompensated space charge or oriented dipolespresent within the media structure These types of media that are commercially calledElectrets have high filtration efficiency without an increase in the pressure drop Numerous studies have investigated conditions and parameters that affect theperformance of Electret filter media Charging methods environmental conditions such astemperature and relative humidity duration of charging and percentage of fibers in amixture are parameters that have been discussed earlier by other researchers In this study the effects of fineness and crimp of Polypropylene fibers and the porosityof the fibrous nonwoven layer on air permeability filtration efficiency and charge ability ofmedia were investigated The charge ability of new and used media was compared and therelationship between that and filtration efficiency is discussed Results showed a dramaticdecrease in air permeability of media over fiber fineness raise Air permeability rosegradually when fiber crimp got doubled The decrease in fiber fineness reduced filtrationefficiency of media sharply Fiber crimp had not specific effect on filtration efficiency Thecharge ability of media went up gradually by fiber fineness raise Used filter media showedmore charge ability compared with new media Keywords Filter Electrostatic Fineness Crimp Efficiency Air permeability Chargeability Polypropylene
