Design of Ultra Wideband Microwave Phase Shifters Soghra Sarkooyeh mh hosseini@ec iut ac ir Date of Submission 2013 04 25 Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Dr Amir Borji aborji@sharif edu Abstract Phase shifters are common microwave devices which are widely used in electronic beam scanning phased array antennas microwave instrumentation and measurement systems modulators and many other industrial applications In order to get wideband performance phase shifters are usually realized in planar stripline technology due to its nondispersive and broadband propagation properties and the approach of coupled transmission lines is usually employed One of the earliest designs which used the coupled lines method to construct broadband phase shifters is the Schiffman differential phase shifter To obtain a broader bandwidth with an acceptable phase ripple by using the edge coupled method some authors proposed the use of cascaded multiple coupled sections so that coupled lines can be connected to each other to build multisession phase shifter Because the bandwidth is increased with coupling increasing therefore stronger coupling is needed Generally the coupling in a coupled line is too loose so to achieve strong coupling it is necessary that the lines are very tight together and this leads to an increase in conductor losses and difficulty of fabrication One way to increase the coupling between edge coupled lines is to use several lines parallel to each other so that the fringing at both edges of a line contribute to the coupling Probably the most practical implementation of this idea is the Lange coupler By using of the standard Schiffman phase shifter and replace coupled line in it with a Lange coupler with strong coupling and broader bandwidth is obtained Also two cascade Lange couplers a two section phase shifter is achieved In this thesis the sizes and performances of the new two section phase shifter and two section standard Schiffman phase shifter are compared The Schiffman phase shifter is based on stripline transmission structures where the odd and even modes propagating along the coupled lines have equal phase velocities and when this type of circuit is designed in a microstrip form the unequal odd and even modes effective dielectric constant results unequal odd and even mode velocities so this leads to poor performance Besides in this thesis the use of wiggly line instead of uniform coupled line in standard Schiffman phase shifter structure is proposed Simulations on wiggly structure show that reduction of odd velocity without effect on even mode phase velocity reduction of return loss and increased bandwidth is achieved Keywords Coupled line Lange Coupler Schiffman phase shifter Wiggly line
