83Remediation of soils contaminated with Used Motor Oil using Microwave heating energy Granular activated carbon and Manganese dioxide as Microwave s absorber Mahsa Moradi Khaneghahi mahsa moradi68@yahoo com 21 09 2013 Department of Civil Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Hasti Hashemi nejad H hasheminejad@cc iut ac itAbstract Used motor oil is known as one of the most massive dangerous wastes worldwide This productcomposed of aliphatic hydrocarbon aromatic or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons PAHs lubricationadditives heavy metals and various organic and inorganic compounds such as phosphorus some chlorine andnitrogen compounds Improper disposal at the land fields non principled drainage road oiling leaks fromsurface and subsurface storage tanks and leaks during motor operation will result in soil pollution to thiscompound Generally speaking various methods exist to modify and control the pollution of contaminatedsoils such as air stripping soil washing solidification and stabilization vapor extraction biological treatmentand thermal treatment Amongst thermal procedure is one of the most appropriate techniques to clean theorganic compounds off soil Microwave with frequency of 0 3 to 300 GHz and wave length 1mm to 1 m canproduce the required energy for increasing the soil s temperature In this case heat is generated within thematerial which leads to increasing efficiency of heating and maintaining the properties of the materialsurface Also rapid and selective heating are other advantage of using microwave In this study the process ofeliminating used motor oil from soil with the use of microwave s thermal energy is evaluated During theconducted experiments we concluded that the oil contaminated soil has little ability to absorb themicrowaves as a result the temperature in bulk soil will not reach the required threshold for oil removal Therefore compounds like magnesium dioxide and activated carbon were added to the soil for betterabsorption of waves and their performance in optimizing the removal efficiency was studied Also the effectof other factors like power with the range of 400 800 and 1000 Watt in activated carbon experiments 800and 1000 Watt in manganese dioxide experiments time length in 5 sets of 2 4 6 8 and 10 minutes for bothexperiments moisture in the range of 5 10 and 15 percent of the dry soil s weight and absorbent dose in 4 classes of 0 2 5 5 and 10 percent of soil s weight for granular activated carbon and 3 classes of 0 5 and10 for manganese dioxide on the efficiency of removal were evaluated Based on the results absorbent doseis important factor The low value of the oil s and soil s effective dielectric constant results low microwave sabsorbance so without adding absorbent maximum process efficiency is 20 This amount increases to 84by adding 10 of GAC The best removal conditions for both absorbents are power of 1000 Watt timing of10 minutes moisture of 15 of the dry soil s weight and absorbent dose of 10 of the sample s weight Theprocess efficiency of 84 for activated carbon and 66 for manganese dioxide were achieved with theseconditions With respect to the analysis results variation of all studied factors in oil removal process issignificant Keywords Used motor oil Soil Microwave Granular activated carbon Manganese dioxide
