106 Simulation of Fire Water Network in Esfahan Refinery and Satisfying NFPA Standard Requirements Esmaeil Taji Tajiesm@yahoo com January 15 2014 Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSedaghat@cc iut ac irAbstractIn industries such as refineries delays in production may strike the economy and may cause crisis inproduction cycle This must be avoided with all costs Hence safety measures and rapid accidentmanagements should be of primary importance Maintaining a solid and efficient firefighting system is oneof the most important aspects of such measures In such industries an efficient and optimum firefightingpiping system is required to prevent fire expansion in the least possible time and reduce damages tominimum The water supply network is the main and the most important part of a firefighting system Updating the performance and efficiency of such high sensitive system is the centre of attention of theindustrial engineers and managers There are no solid studies in Iran with safety measure for avoidance orcontrol of a fire incident Hence in this study for the first time the water supply network of the firefightingsystem of Isfahan oil refinery is exclusively studied and simulated For the simulations the constraints inNFPA standards and other standards are considered to assess the present safety measures of the refinery Allrequirements of this standard and the Islamic Republic of Iran Ministry of Petroleum Refineries haveidentified in this study to conduct a comprehensive standards based simulations are considered This rangeincludes a variety of parameters including the proper pressure range velocity range suitable pipe diameter the amount and speed of water flow characteristics and water networks in refineries All fire fighting watersupply pipes valves including Fire Fighting Hydrant valves and monitors pumps nodes geographiclocation land and water saving tanks in Esfahan Oil Refining Company have been evaluated in thesimulation model in various positions The simulation results show that it is possible to model the situationin which extensive supply network of complex refineries present Analysis results with guidelines for theoperation of the network and how to comply with these standards is presented This table shows thesimulation results are very good approximation to reality and also reflects the relative match well with thestandard requirements In this regard based on other criteria such as multiple tanks their importance andprofile of the stored fluid risk maps are presented A common application of genetic algorithm is used asoptimization function GA is a useful tool in pattern recognition feature selection machine learning andimage understanding In genetic algorithms genetic evolution of organisms can be simulated Inspired bynature evolutionary algorithm based on the principle of sustainability best is based on stochasticoptimization algorithms are a class apart One of the application results of this research is to introduce amodel for which the appropriate arrangement of firefighting water valves are identified to extinct fire in leastpossible time The arrangement of water valves is consistent with the standards of fire extinction in less than15 minutes The model is based on the optimization technique of Genetic Algorithm which is employed forthe Isfahan refinery Genetic algorithm a meta heuristic algorithms and is based on genetics or naturalselection is based on the superior survival Keywords Refinery Fire Fighting Water Supply Network Standard NFPA risk mapping genetic algorithms
