82 Investigating the Causes of Gully Erosion in Joshegan and Kamo Region Isfahan Province Asmatullah Ghaljaee A ghaljaee@na iut ac ir 28 October 2013 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor H R Karimzadeh hr karimzadeh@cc iut ac ir AbstractSoil serves as one of the most vital natural resources in every country Nowadays soil erosion is foundto be a hazard for human welfare and even his life among others Gully erosion as a most common soilerosion can reduce soil fertility and land utilization damaging roads constructions and buildingsubstantially Gully is a steep channel with abrupt erosional head created as a result of alternate surfacestream flow action The present research was aimed to investigate determinant factors affecting gullyerosion in study sites of Jushghan and Kamu located at Kashan sity in Karkas Mountains fromOctober 2012 to April 2013 The principle goal was determination of factors affecting on gulliesregression For this the number of five gullies were selected and their profile was drawn Soil sampleswere taken from head walls in three horizons Soil properties of texture EC saturated moisture PH Ca and Mg So4 organic matter Na and soil component percent in every horizon gravel percent aggregates mean weight and sodium adsorption ratio were measured in addition relationship betweengully length and its volume and its thresholds were calculated Results showed that the largest numberof gullies were recorded in Neogen era and Shemshak formation was related to Jurassic period so thatall of them were located at three land uses of rangeland agriculture and irrigation Results did notshowed significant significance among gullies in different land uses Of course gullies regression ratevaried in various land uses so that the highest and lowest rate was in rangeland and irrigation land useswith 54 and 9 5 cm respectively While studying gullies frequency in slope classes there was nodifference between gullies number Number of gullies was more in slope ranged 6 12 While lineargullies were observed in slope less than 6 and up to 12 as well Slope classes varied significantly inrespect to gullies so that it was much in slope less than 6 Gullies regressive rate did not varied inShemshak and Neogen formations however gullies frequency in Shemshak formation was much thanNeogen one It was found that there was no significant difference between gully backward and soiltexture But it was much in order of sandy clay loam silt loam and sandy loam textures respectively Also there was much difference between gullies percent and soil texture such that silt loam exhibitedless frequency of gullies In addition sandy loam textures showed high frequency than two others As awhole results showed that increasing fine grain particles like clay and silt affects much more gulliesregression It was less in soils with higher organic matter Ca and Mg and PH ranged 7 55 to 7 88 Incontrast high level of sand silt gravel and EC led to much gullies backward The others main factorsare permeability basin area multiplication by drainage gully middle height rainfall To estimategullies erosion rate its length and volume equation was calculated according to aerial photograph Keywords Gully backward Ca and Mg Na average slope soil texture gravel percent rainfall drainage
