Experimental and Numerical Explanation of Steel Sheet Forming with a Moving Heat Source Mehdi Safari m safari@me iut ac ir December 18 2013 Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranSupervisor Prof Mahmoud Farzin Email address farzin@cc iut ac irAdvisor Assist Prof Abbas Ghaei Department graduate program coordinator Dr M R Salimpour Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University of TechnologyAbstract The aim of this thesis is investigating and proposing new methods for forming of doublecurvature surfaces with a heat source In order to obtain a better knowledge about theprocess in the first part of the thesis we focus on the forming of 2D shapes with a laserheat source These researches are focused on laser bending of tailor machined blanks Afterthis section in the second part of the thesis our researches are focused on the production ofdouble curvature surfaces with a heat source For this purpose forming of a bowl shapedsurface with a spiral irradiating scheme and also production of dome and saddle shapes intwo separate stages are investigated Bowl shaped surfaces are formed from circular plateswith spiral irradiating scheme and using flame as the heat source Dome and saddle shapesare also investigated in two stages In the first stage a suitable irradiating scheme isproposed using an analytical method for forming of double curvature dome and saddleshapes Then performance of proposed irradiating scheme is investigated withexperimental tests and numerical simulations The results show that the proposedirradiating scheme can be successfully used to make dome and saddle shapes with largedeformations with reasonable symmetries Keywords Forming with a heat source Tailor machined blanks Double curvature plates Dome shapesurface Saddle shape surface1 Introduction Sheet metal forming with a heat source is a flexible forming process that needs no hardtooling or external forces This process can be used in many sheet metal processes such asbending and spatial forming of plates In the sheet metal forming with a heat source asheet is irradiated with a laser or flame beam Thereby inducing rapid localized heatingfollowed by cooling as the beam moves on to an adjacent area In the heating stage if thethermal strains in the irradiated zone exceed the elastic limit then these strains areconverted into plastic compressive strains In the cooling stage the sheet will undergoshrinkage and therefore a complex shape of the work piece can be formed Investigationson the sheet metal forming with a heat source can be divided into 2D and 3D forming Considerable amount of research has been carried out on two dimensional laser forming However in order to advance the process further to industrial applications it is necessaryto study 3D laser forming 3D laser forming studies have recently been investigated andfew researches have been reported in this field due to extreme complexities In 1997 Shmizu 1 applied genetic algorithms to a dome shape sheet to determinerequired amount of heat assuming laser scanning paths are known In 1998 Jang andMoon 2 developed an algorithm to determine heating lines based on the principal
