142 Assessment of Awareness Among Greenhouse Owners Producing ofCucumber and Tomato and Consumers Regarding the Health Quality of these Products in Isfahan County Atie Sandoghi a sandoghi@ag iut ac ir 21 December 2013 Department of Rural Development Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Amir mozafar Amini aamini@cc iut ac ir Ali Yousefi ayousefi@cc iut ac ir Abstract As the world population is looking to increase during the twentieth century the need for high use of inputsin farming systemsfor more food production is obvious Although during this period the yield of many crops has increased remarkably but intensive farmingbased on the development of new technology tools particularly in the developing countries has beencaused some unintended consequences in ecological technical economic and social aspects Intensive farmingin Iran has created many problems such as losses and damages to the environment and natural resources destruction of ecological habitats heavy use of pesticides and chemical fertilizersand increased agricultural waste Due to this problems the organic farming as an alternative agricultural system is taken into considerationin order to producing healthy foods The aim of this study is to assess the awarenessand attitude of urban consumers and greenhouse cucumber and tomato farmerstoward organic farming in Isfahan County The total sample size was 170 farmers and 220 urban consumers Data was collected by using cluster andstratified sampling method through face to face interviews based on two comprehensive structured questionnaires Before the survey the reliability and validity of questionnaire was initially evaluated on a pre test study respectively by using Cronbach s alpha coefficient and Kaiser Meyer Olkin KMO criteria Behavioral analysis of farmers decisionsbased on knowledge attitudes and practice modelby usingstructural equation modelingand consumers willingness to pay for the organic cucumbers and tomatoeshas been evaluated by choice experiment method and the multinomial logitmodel The results indicated that most greenhouse farmers 85 had moderate and positive attitude towardproduction of healthy crops Despite the positive attitude of most greenhouse farmers they have no enough attention to properuse of pesticides and fertilizers The results of multiple regressionanalysis showed that economic and technical support of government awareness organizations marketingand media has a significant and positive effect on the farmers attitude and age has a negative effect Analyzing consumer s preference indicated that 77 1 12 4 and 10 1percent of participants respectively have chosen healthy organic and conventional products Furthermore factors such as income knowledge regarding the characteristics of healthy and organic products consumer s attitude toward the importance of environment protection the presence of disabled and elderly person in the householdhasa positive effect on the respondents willingness to pay Most consumers have expressed that the most important problems for the purchasingthese products are lack of guaranteed labels and high prices Keywords organic farming cucumber and tomato greenhouse farmers consumers structural equations modeling Choice experiment Isfahan
