Investigation of Discharge Coefficient and Flow Characteristics onSharp Crested Side Weirs in Presence of Guide Vanes Sajad Samiee didar1292@gmail com 13 Jan 2014 Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Lanquage Farsi E mail heidar@cc iut ac irSupervisor Dr Manouchehr HeidarpourAbstractA side weir is one type of overflow structure that is installed in the side of a channel toevacuate the excessive flow laterally A simple way to improve the hydraulicperformance of this structure is the application of guide vanes In this study dischargecoefficient and characteristics of flow over rectangular sharp crested side weirs in thepresence of guide vanes were experimentally investigated In addition the behavior ofthe flow in the absence of vanes was considered for comparison Analyzing themeasured 3D velocity distribution data indicated that in both presence and absence ofguide vanes the maximum and minimum of the longitudinal velocity occurred at thebeginning and end of the side weir respectively In comparison with the no vane case the presence of guide vanes significantly decreased the longitudinal velocity In bothcases the direction of flow near the water surface was downward and withapproaching the weir crest the flow direction was reversed and the upward flow wasgenerated The presence of guide vanes increased the magnitude of downward velocityand adversely reduced the magnitude of upward velocity over the crest Furthermore the maximum of the lateral velocity in both cases was observed at the end of the sideweir But the presence of guide vanes increased the lateral velocity thereby resulting inmore discharge over the side structure Data indicaes that using guide vanes cause toincrease of discharge coefficient about to 30 Key word rectangular sharp crested side weir three dimensional velocity guide vanes discharge
