Morphological Comparison of Kura Barb Barbus lacerta Populations in Urmia Tigris and Caspian Sea Basins Amirhosein Tahmasebi Dehkordi amirhosein tahmasebi86@yahoo com January 22 2014 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language PersianYazdan Keivany Assoc Prof Supervisor Keivany@cc iut ac irAbstract Some 128 specimens of Kura barb Barbus lacerta populations from Tigris 55 Caspian Sea 34 and Urmia 39 basins were caught by seine net to compare their morphology The sampleswere fixed in 10 formalin and transferred to the Fisheries Laboratory of Isfahan University ofTechnology for ichthyological studies Morphological studies were assessed by the traditionalmethod truss distances with 10 landmarks and geometric morphometrics with 14 landmarks Fortraditional morphological studies morphometric and meristic traits and proportions were used For the statistical analysis analysis of variance followed by Duncan s test nonparametric H Kruskal Wallis test and factor analysis were used Total length to fork length standard length tototal length body depth to caudal peduncle length body depth to standard length head length tostandard length snout length to head length postorbital length to head length preanal length tostandard length predorsal length to preanal length dorsal fin height to standard length ventralfin length to standard length pectoral fin length to standard length body depth snout length eyediameter and dorsal fin height showed significant differences P 0 05 among the three basins Based on the correlation matrix of the traits four factors with a total variance of 78 74 and aneigenvalues of over one were extracted Scatter plot of the first two factors in factor analysis ofmorphometric traits and proportions showed a high overlap Evaluation of the measureddistances showed significant differences in 10 truss distances including truss 1 2 3 5 6 8 12 13 16 and 22 P 0 05 Based on the correlation matrix of the traits one factor with a varianceof 97 87 and an over one eigenvalue was extracted In the geometric morphometric analysis landmarks 1 4 5 11 12 13 and 14 were the most variable ones Based on the correlation matrixof the traits two factors with a total variance of 60 96 and over one eigenvalues wereextracted Scatter plot of the first two factors in factor analysis showed a high overlap and therewas no separation among them but the Canonical Variate Analysis CVA partially separated ofthe three basins Six meristic traits showed significant differences P 0 05 among thepopulations Based on the correlation matrix of the traits three factors with a total variance of71 69 and over one eigenvalues were extracted Scatter plot of the first two factors in factoranalysis of meristic traits showed an extensive overlap The results showed that traditionalmethods failed to separate populations of the three basins but truss and geometric morphometricmethods were able to partly separate the populations It can be concluded that B lacertapopulation in the three basins have a close affinity with each other and they can be hardlyseparated from each other Key words morphology Kura barb Barbus lacerta truss geometric morphometric morphometric traits meristic traits
