87 Study on the Seasonal Population Changes and Biology of the Dominant Clearwing Moth Species Lep Sesiidae on Ornamental Trees in Isfahan Bahman zarifnia Zarifnia861894@gmail com January 7 2014 Department of Plant Protection Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiJ khajehali Assist Prof khajeali@cc iut ac ir AbstractMoths of the family Sesiidae are among the most destructive pests of fruitful and non fruitful trees in all over theworld In this study several issues including identification of damage causing species the percentage and intensityof infestation on various trees under natural conditions biology and population variations of the dominant species onplane trees effectiveness of pheromone traps and the effects of some chemical control procedures were studied inIsfahan landscapes Species identification was done by sequencing the cytochrome oxidase I COI region Brownish droppings as active larval infestations and blackish one as old infestations as well as total number of pupalexuviae were used to determine the percentage and intensity of infestation on various trees under natural conditions The biology of pest was assessed by weekly sampling or twice a week at critical stages in 2012 and 2013at twoIsfahan municipality regions Sampling was done by skin removal and counting the number of larvae and pupae Some reproductive parameters were determined in the laboratory conditions 26 C and 40 5 humidity byrearing collected pupa from plane trees The effectiveness of three pheromone products in the monitoring ofdominant population was assessed in three Isfahan municipality regions The effects of two chemical controlprocedures was also determined including trunk spraying with imidacloprid deltamethrin and chlorpyrifos andtrunk injection with imidacloprid oxydemeton methyl and azadirachtin in two municipality regions The resultsdemonstrated that damaging species in Isfahan landscapes are belonged to Synanthedon caucasica Gorbunov causing damage to plane and elm trees and Sesia pimplaeformis Oberth r causing damage to willow poplar andaspen trees The infestation percentage results showed that 53 8 Platanus orientalis 64 4 Ulmus carpinifolia 65 6 ofUlmus carpinifolia var umbraculifera 45 2 Populus alba 52 6 Salix alba and 53 2 of total host trees were infestedby these pests The results of field studies on the biology of S caucasica showed that this species is univoltine andoverwinter as late instar larvae Adults begin to emerge in mid April and emerging continues until August The peakof the adult population happened at the third decade of May and larval population s peak happened in the thirddecade of July Traps baited with of S myopaeformis pheromone Agrisense Company were more effective thantraps baited with S myopaeformis pheromone Trifolia M Company or S tipuliformis pheromone Chem TicaInternational S A Company for trapping of S caucasica adults Based on the alive larval populations under trunkbark four months after treatment the results of chemical control demonstrated that spraying with chlorpyrifos wasmore effective than imidacloprid and deltamethrin spraying while trunk injection with azadirachtin and oxydemetonmethyl were more effective than imidacloprid injection Although these findings are useful in the management of thepest more research should be carried out on the identification and synthesis of the pest pheromone and evaluation ofother pest control tactics Key words landscape pests wood boring pests cytochrome oxidase I pheromone andchemical control
