The Efficiency of Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic Biopolymer in Controlled Release Nitrate and Potassium Mahdeyeh Heidari m heidari810@yahoo com January 13 2014 Department of Soil Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiMehran shirvani shirvani@cc iut ac irAbstractProviding mineral nutrients of plants is from the main requirements associated with theproduction of crops However indiscriminate use of fertilizers has increased concernsabout the adverse effects on the environment and the physical and chemical propertiesof soils One of the effective methods to overcome the problems of indiscriminate use ofchemical fertilizers is the development of controlled release fertilizers Biologicalpolymers are most suitable among natural compounds for synthesis of the slow releasesystems of nutrients In this study alginate and rosin bio polymers individually orcombined with zeolite clay with the zeolite polymer ratios of 1 2 1 4 1 8 were used toproduce slow release systems of nitrate and potassium The amount of nitrate andpotassium ions released from the slow release systems to the aqueous solutions weremeasured after 1 3 5 10 15 20 25 and 30 days The effects of zeolite rosin basedsystems on corn uptake and leaching of potassium and nitrate ions were alsoinvestigated using sand cultures Results showed that the rosin zeolite systems were themost effective compounds in gradual release of potassium and nitrate ions The sandbeds treated with KNO3 showed the greatest amounts of nitrate and potassium ionsleached with the highest concentration peaks occurred at the first leaching event Thegreatest cumulative amounts of ions leached were observed for the cultures treated withKNO3 and 1 4 zeolite rosin system and the lowest amount was measured for thosecontaining the 1 8 system The shoot yields were similar for the plants treated with theslow release systems and KNO3 However the greatest root yield was obtained in potstreated with KNO3 Maximum nitrogen uptake by the roots was related to plants treatedwith the pure rosin system Application of the other systems caused similar plantnitrogen uptake While the greatest potassium uptake by the corn root was related topots treated with the pure rosin and the 1 8 systems The highest nitrogen uptake by theshoots was observed by the plants under two treatment of pure rosin and 1 8 systemsand the highest K uptake by the shoots was related to the 1 8 system Overall slowrelease systems based on rosin zeolite are the most suitable candidates to slowly releasenitrate and potassium for the plants Key words Alginate rosin slow release nitrate
