106 Manufacturing and Accuracy Evaluation of a Powder Based Additive Manufacturing Hamed Mirian h mirian@me iut ac ir Date of Submission 2014 01 30 Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Dr Mohsen Badrossamay mohsen badrossamay@cc iut ac ir Dr Ehsan Foroozmehr eforoozmehr@cc iut ac irAbstract In recent years Computer Aided Manufacturing and Computer Aided Design CAD CAM haveattracted attention of many artisans majorly due to direct role of computer in production trend and couldnot only reduce human errors considerably but also increase production and exploitation speed Globaltrade and intensity of competition between manufacturers converted time of presenting a product toconsumer market into determining factor of sale Today components are manufactured with the deviceswhich are based on CNC machining and are programmable But machining devices which are applied forproduction should have higher capabilities based on complexity of work piece which leads to increase ofexpense and time Therefore there is need for the process in which complexities of work piece areindependent of the device complexities and when the piece becomes more complex time and cost ofproduction don t grow considerably This process can be regarded as additive manufacturing AM process Use of this process not only increases production capabilities of the complex parts but alsoconsiderably reduces time and cost of production Additive manufacturing is considered as production techniques in which parts are fabricated from a3D CAD file layer by layer Depending on the used material and the applied bonding technology betweenthe lines and layer many AM techniques have been developed Processing metallic and ceramic materialare of interest due to uniqes advantages that offered by these process Among AM processes 3D printing has gained many attentions for fabricating different types ofmaterial in reduced time and cost It is likely that manufacturing of metallic components via 3D printingmay role a crussial issue in the development of such processes in the next years The main goal of this study was focoused on fabrication of three dimentional of metal parts through3D printing technology In this research firstly conceptual and mechanical design of a 3D printing systemcapable to fabricate multiple materials was carried out In the next stage of the research and for feasibilitystudy of manufacturing a 3D printing thermal nozzle of a HP printer was used and a printer with powdermanual feed was designed manufactured and assembled To estimate capability of the system benchmarkparts were manufactured by combining stainless steel powder 314 and PVA powder Dimensional andoptical measurements of the produced parts were done and dimensional accuracy was estimated Theobtained results confirm creation of metal parts with the provided inexpensive method Key words additive manufacturing 3D printing Design and manufacturing accuracy evaluation
