76 Numerical Analysis of Thermal Performance of Flat Plate Solar Collectors Using computational Fluid Dynamics Maryam Vatankhah m vatankhah@ce iut ac ir Date of Submission Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Dr S Gh Etemad and Dr M HaghshenasfardAbstractThe use of solar energy has increased in recent years due to the declining fossil fuel resources andenvironmental concerns about global warming and air pollution Due to lack of pollution free andthe availability solar energy is considered one of the main promising alternative sources ofenergy to replace the fossil energy resources Solar water heating systems are one of the mainapplications of solar energy which in these systems sunlight is transferred to water or workingfluid The most important part of a solar water heater system is the solar collector There areseveral types of solar collectors which the most common and popular kind of solar collectors isflat plate type In this study CFD analysis was used to investigate the effect of differentparameters on thermal efficiency enhancement of flat plate solar collectors Important parameterssuch as physical properties of the working fluid pipe roughness geometry of absorber plate andthickness of the glass cover have been investigated The results showed that by increasing the tuberoughness the collector efficiency increases The thickness of the glass is not effective parameteron the thermal efficiency The geometry and shape of absorber plate also was investigated Flatand curved plates have been used and the numerical results showed that the efficiency of the flatabsorber plate is higher than curved absorber Key words Flat plate solar collector Solar hot water heater Solar energy Computational Fluid Dynamics CFD
