Heavy Metal Accumulation in Sediments and Typha latifolia in Anzali International Wetland Amin ghasemi Amin ghasemi1@na iut ac ir Date of Submission March 2014 Department of Natural Resoursces Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Nourollah MirghaffariAbstractThe presence of heavy metals in the aquatic ecosystems has caused many environmental problems These elements enter the environment through natural factors especially because of industrial andagricultural activities urban wastewater and accumulate in the aquatic organisms via the foodchain Aquatic plants as a link in the food chain can indicate relative increases in theconcentrations of heavy metals in the deposits of the ecosystem in sediments because they are ableto absorb heavy metals Common cattail Typha latifolia is an aquatic and wetland macrophytethat lives at the edges of lakes swamps rivers and wetland in the warm and tropical regions and isoften found in dense populations and in the form of colonies in these aquatic systems This researchwas conducted with the purpose of studying the accumulation of the heavy metals including lead cadmium and zinc in common cattail and in the deposits of Anzali international wetland Themeasured concentrations of the mentioned metals in the deposits and in the roots stems andleaves were 26 7 18 59 10 47 and 13 7 micrograms per gram dry weight for lead 4 36 3 80 3 10 3 42 micrograms per gram dry weight for cadmium and 88 44 91 14 61 17 and 23 84micrograms per gram dry weight for zinc respectively Results showed that the eastern part of thewetland was the most polluted Results concerning the means of concentrations of lead in thedifferent organs of common cattail indicate that there are differences in the amounts of this metalabsorbed by the roots stems and leaves of this plant The largest bioconcentration factor BCF ratio was that of zinc and cadmium had the maximum transfer factor TF The high TF forcadmium may be due to the ease of its transfer and to the high mobility of this metal Resultsindicated the studied plant is a suitable biological monitor for studying the mentioned metals in thedifferent parts of the lagoon Moreover it must be noted that this plant has an important role inmodifying and reducing pollutions in the lagoon because of its wide distribution in the lagoon anddue to the rates of accumulation of these metals in this plant and therefore common cattail maybeconsidered as a phytoremediant species in the Anzali wetland KeywordsHeavy metals Common cattail Anzali wetland Phytoremediation Bioconcentration factor
