81 Preparation of Carboxymethyle Cellulose Nano clay Bio composite Film Laminated with PVOH to Improve Mechanical Characteristies Farimah seif Seiff00@yahoo com Department of Food Science and Technology Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Mehdi Kadivar Kadivar@cc iut ac irAbstractIn the last decades in cause of increasing environmental pollutions and in the wake of that compilation ofnew standards by related organizations a number of efforts have been made to to extend of pac aging onthe basis of biodegradable biopolymers and improving their functions Lac of decomposition by naturescycle and possible immigration of the monomers from package into the foods that succeeds danger ofcarcinogenesis in human and bad taste of food is among concerns come into attentions due to employmentof synthetic polymers Biodegradale packages have properties of plastic along with biodegradability During the last 20 years application of multilayer films flourished in order to rally lots of monolayer film sfunctional features and increasing the shelf time Outer layers of these films contains mechanicalproperties water vapor permeability while inner lyers are impermeable to gases Carboxy methylcellulose CMC is a linear derivation of cellulose which is soluble in water CMC has the ability ofmaking resistant transparent smooth and uniform films However poor mechanical preventional andphysical properties of biodegradable films are among the restrictions for their use in packaging industry Poly vinyl alcohol PVOH is the plenteous soluble synthetic non toxicality polymer with high tensilestrength and desirable stickiness characteristics Incorporation of nanoparticles for improvement ofmechanical and water vapor permeability Has been recently taken into consideration Nano clay is knownas one of the best nano particles filler due to have sheet structure works as a hurdle for water vaporpermeability Nano clay causes more solidity of produced nano composite by keeping up bonds andstrong interaction with biopolymer Therefore the main aim of this research was to produce modified nanoclay and then using it in one layer and two layer films In this research Yazd s sepiolite stone was used forproducing modified nano clay After grinding of stone the powder was washed and then modified usingone molar solution of sodium chloride in order to perch of sodium cations In next step for the cationexchange and hydrophobization of clay cetylpridinium chloride was used In the last step sepiolite nanoclay was produced by nano ball mill In order to recognizing of replacing cetylpridinium chloride withsodium from the modified soil FT IR was done The result of SEM images and analysis of DIGIMIZERsoftware showed that use of nano ball mill for 4 hours has been enough for producing nano clay Bio nanocomposite films one layer and two layers was then formed Effects of different amounts of nano clay 2 5 10 15 on mechanical properties water vapor permeability surface color transparency thickness solubility swelling moisture and contact angle in one and two layer CMC PVOH films has beeninvestigated The results of these tests showed that addition of nano clay up to 10 in terms of dry mattercauses improving mechanical and physical properties of produced films But adding 15 nano clay hadbeen agglomeration in polymer had no positive effect in improving mechanical properties Two layerfilms which are made from one synthetic film and one natural film has the specialties between these twokinds of films It s stronger than CMC and weaker than PVOH Results of SEM images showed that nanoparticles were spreaded in matrix in a very good way In total produced two layer films which had 10 nano clay can be used as the proper film in packaging industry Keywords Biodegradable packaging Biopolymer Poly vinyl alcohol Mechanicalproperties Carboxymethyl cellulose Nano clay
