Effects of Substitution of Dried Sugar Beet Pulp for Corn Silage onPerformance and Chewing Behaviour of High Producing Dairy Cows Nima Naderi n naderi@ag iut ac ir June 17 2014 Department of Animal Sciences College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor G R Ghorbani Ghorbani@cc iut ac ir Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of replacing corn silage with sugar beet pulp on performance of Holstein Dairy cows in mid lactation Four primiparous DIM 120 5 11 0 BW 504 3 38 6 kg and producing 41 4 4 4 kg d milk and 4 multiparous DIM 125 8 13 4 BW 641 8 65 6 kg and producing 42 6 1 6 kg d milk Holstein cows were used in a 4 4 Latin square design with 21 days periods Each period consisted of 14 d of adaptation followed by 7 d of data collection Treatments were 1 16 of diet DM as corn silage control 2 8 corn silage 8 sugar beet pulp 3 4 corn silage 12 sugar beet pulp 4 0 corn silage 16 sugar beet pulp As corn silage was replaced with sugar beet pulp the propotion of the particles retained on the top sieve of the PSPS 19 mm and the second sieve 8 19 mm reduced linearly P 0 05 While the the propotion of the particles retained on the third sieve 1 18 8 increased linearly P 0 05 causing large decrease in peNDF 8 value P 0 05 As a result chewing activity decresed P 0 05 and consequently rumen pH and milk fat percentage decreased liniearly P 0 05 In addition 19 mm and 8 mm sorting index increased linearly P 0 05 while 1 18 mm sorting index decreased linearly P 0 05 as corn silage was replaced with sugar beet pulp Replacing corn silage with sugar beet pulp caused a decrease in acetate and butyrate concentration and an increase in propionate concentration in the rumen and acetate to propionate ration decreased liniearly P 0 05 Even though the dry matter intake was not affected by treatments milk yield 3 5 FCM ECM SCM and milk energy increased quadratically P 0 05 with highest production for the 12 beet pulp treatment As corn silage was replaced with sugar beet pulp the NEL and metabolizable protein content of diets increased which is account for increasing the apparent nitrogen efficiency Milk protein percentage increase and milk urea nitrogen and rumen ammonia nitrogen decreased significantly P 0 05 Plasma BHBA decreased linearly P 0 05 as corn silage was replaced with sugar beet pulp The average value of THI during the experiment was 73 2 In that situation rectum temperature deacreased linearly P 0 05 as corn silage was replaced with sugar beet pulp Replacing corn silage with sugar beet pulp decrease the cost of diet P 0 05 and income increased Chemical composition of sugar beet pulp produced in Iran especially crude protein fractions was different from tabular values of CNCPS Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System According to results of this experiments replacing 75 of corn silage with sugar beet pulp increased milk yield 3 5 FCM ECM and by decreasing MUN and rumen ammonia nitrogen and increasing milk protein improved the apparent nitrogen efficiency Key words corn silage sugar beet pulp performance Dairy cows
