74 Distribution of soil heavy metals zinc lead copper cadmium nickel pollution in Isfahan urban areas Raza Moradi Aryamoradi67@yahoo com June 24 2014 Department of Soil Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiHossein Shariatmadari shariat@cc iut ac irAbstractEnvironmental degradation and pollution is one of the major issues of industrial communities however the problem is a world wide concern affecting the human society globally Pollutants include differentenvironmental disruptive agents among them heavy metals due to their non degradable nature and theirharmful effects on living organisms even at low concentrations received specific concern The study ofsoil heavy metal distribution is essential for monitoring and managing the soil pollution and protection ofthe environmental quality Therefore this research aimed to investigate the concentrations of lead zinc copper nickel and cadmium in the soils of some metropolitan areas of Isfahan landscape A point map ofthe heavy metals distribution in soil is prepared using the laboratory data and the GIS information Sixtysurface 0 10 cm soil samples including 30 samples from the main squares of the city and 30 controlsamples from houses or abandoned lands in the vicinity of the squares were collected in an area of 482square kilometers Total and DTPA extractable concentrations of the heavy metal as well as some othersoil properties including pH EC calcium carbonate content cation exchange capacity sand silt and claypercentagees were determined Descriptive statistical analyses including correlation analysis clusteranalysis and principal component analysis were performed on the data using SPSS statistical software The information on soil management of parks and landscapes including the amounts and the types ofapplied chemical and organic fertilizers and soil amendments by fourteen local Isfahan city municipalitiesalong with some other dominant activities as industrial activities and some statistics on the city trafficwere recorded The results generally indicated that the levels of heavy metals in the soils were at Nodanger state as described with the national standard for urban parks and landscapes The results ofcorrelation analysis cluster analysis and principal analysis showed that copper and zinc were originatedfrom the same source and strongly correlated with soil organic matter This suggested that the applicationof chemical and organic fertilizers as the major bedding practices in the parks and landscapes may becontroling the soil Zn and Cu concentrations The results however showed that the soil contamination byPb can be due to other activities mainly car traffic The regions of heavy car traffic were coincided withthe high concentrations of soil Pb Nickel showed no correlation with other heavy metals as well as thehuman activities recorded in this study On the other hand there was a significant correlation between Niand soil calcium carbonates suggesting mostly geogenic sources for this metal The level of cadmium inall soil samples of the studied area was below the detection limit It is worth mentioning that soil heavymetal concentrations in the main points squares were more than the controls houses and abandonedlands therefore attention on the heavy metal accumulation of the practiced soils will be needed Key Words Heavy metals Chemical and organic fertilizers Soil pollution origins of pollution Urbantransport
