Pretreatment of Lignocellulosic Materials for Enhancement of Ethanol and Biogas Production and Techno Economic Analysis Marzieh Shafiei m shafiei@ce iut ac ir Date of Submission August 20 2014 Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of TechnologyDegree Ph D Language FarsiSupervisor Hamid Zilouei h zilouei@cc iut ac irAbstractSecond generation of biofuels from lignocellulosic materials is known as a suitable substitution for fossilfuels For the commercial and efficient production of these fuels a pretreatment step is required Furthermore application of pretreatments with minimum negative environmental effects is desired In thefirst part of this thesis novel pretreatment methods with N methylmorpholine N oxide NMMO 1 Ethyl 3 methylimidazolium acetate EMIM OAc and 1 Butyl 3 methylimidazolium acetate BMIM OAc wereinvestigated for the production of ethanol and biogas These pretreating compounds are efficient cellulosesolvents that do not produce toxic wastes The ability to be recycled and reused is another advantage of thesesolvents The pretreatment of spruce and pine woods were performed at 120 C for 1 15 h The pretreatmentimproved the ethanol yield of pinewood chips and powder from 1 7 and 7 2 respectively to themaximum respective values of 51 2 and 86 1 Furthermore this pretreatment improved the methane yieldof pinewood chips and powder by 6 8 and 3 4 folds respectively NMMO and ionic liquids EMIM OAc and BMIM OAc were also used for the pretreatment of spruce Pretreatment by these solvents improvedthe ethanol yield of 9 7 for untreated spruce powder to 69 4 81 0 and 81 5 respectively Ethanolyield of untreated spruce chips was improved from 2 7 to 36 1 51 8 and 66 8 by the solvents respectively FTIR measurements indicated that the ratio of cellulose to lignin on the wood surface isincreased by the pretreatments Reduction in the wood crystallinity as well as increase in the porosity wasobserved as well All these changes are potential reasons for enhancements in ethanol and biogas productionyields In the next part of this thesis techno economic analysis was performed for 10 biofuel productionscenarios in Sweden and Iran The scenarios were simulated by Aspen plus and then the economicevaluations were performed by Aspen PEA Wheat straw rice straw pinewood and paper tube were selectedas raw materials for these processes NMMO and steam explosion pretreatments were studied in theseprocesses The results indicated that addition of carbon dioxide and energy taxes helps the economicfeasibility of biofuel production in Sweden since 57 of gasoline price belongs to tax The gasolineequivalent prices of biofuels in the Swedish market are about 10 cheaper than the taxed gasoline In thisstudy the gasoline equivalent prices were 18 39 cheaper than the taxed gasoline Production of biofuels inIran was not economically feasible because of the additional subsidies for gasoline However the eliminationof gasoline subsidies and addition of taxes which are planned by the government will help the economy ofbiofuel production in Iran Pretreatment by NMMO resulted in higher biofuel yields However steamexplosion pretreatment resulted in better economical profitability since there was no additional cost for thesolvent Key wordsEthanol Biogas Lignocellulosic Materials NMMO EMIM OAc BMIM OAc Techno economic analysis
