70 Morphophonological Characteristics and Pollination System in Some Species of Apiaceae Family Ehsan Ataii Ehsanataeie@gmail com September 9 2014 Department of Agronomy and Plant Breeding Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiA Mirlohi Prof Supervisor mirlohi@cc iut ac irM R Sabzalian Assist Prof Supervisor sabzalian@cc iut ac irAbstractThe family Apiaceae comprises 300 455 genera and some 3000 3750 species The family is originated fromthe Mediterranean region Turkey Iran and Turkmenistan Some of the most important species of this familyare Fennel Dill Cumin Carrot Coriander and Parsley The present research was conducted to determinegenetic variation within and between species in terms of morpho phenological traits for finding phylogeneticrelations and evaluating their breeding systems including self or open pollination Genotypes were planted inthe field according to a randomized complete block design with three replications Results of descriptivestatistics showed that the species have little overlapping regarding the most studied charecteristics The rangeof changes in studied traits of genotypes regarding the selfing ratio indicated three separated categories ofbreeding systems including self pollination cross pollination and the intermediate group Cumin with theselfing ratio of 69 16 was the only self pollinated species and two species of coriander and parsley with theselfing ratio of 43 21 and 32 46 respectively were two intermediate species The selfing ratio for fennel dill and carrot were 8 87 11 85 and 16 92 respectively indicating that these species are dominantlycross pollinated The results of cluster analysis based on the thirteen characteristics showed that 28 genotypeswere divided into seven groups Six species out of seven species were completely separated from each otherand Persian carrot zardak and carrot was categorized in a single group Also 9 fennels genotypes weredivided into two groups of early maturing and late maturing genotypes The results of Bill F test for the groupsobtained from cluster analysis indicated that seed length seed width height the ratio of height to the numberof lateral shoots the number of lateral shoots days to 50 flowering and days to 50 seed setting had themost role in separating cluster groups Also bi plot of principle component analysis confirmed the result ofcluster analysis Discrimination analysis for all species showed that all species except for Persian carrot zardak and carrot were distinguished from each other and seed length and seed width had the most role indifferentiation of annual and biannual species from each other Discrimination analysis for plants with annualand biannual growth habit separately showed better differentiation of existing species in sub groups Forannual spices seed length seed width and essential oil content had the most role in separatinggroups and forbiannual species 1000 seed weight and seed width had the most effect Dill and carrot had the most geneticdistance from each other and also Persian carrot zardak and carrot had the most similarity among all species However among plants with annual growth habit dill and coriander were the nearest species and fennel anddill had the most distance Among biannual species parsley and Persian carrot zardak had the least geneticdistance Key words Apiaceae family morphological traits breeding system genetic relation
