Multi objective reliability optimization problem for complex systems by a new redundancy strategy Mostafa Abouei Ardakan m abouei@in iut ac ir Date of defense 2015 01 18 Department of industrial engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree Ph D Language Farsi Supervisor Ali Zeinal Hamadani Hamadani@cc iut ac ir Abstract In reliability optimization two problems have been commonly considered by theresearchers These two problems are Redundancy Allocation Problem RAP and Reliability Redundancy Allocation Problem RRAP Traditionally in both RAP andRRAP problems it is assumed that the redundant components are used based onpredefined strategies Generally in reliability studies two different strategies areconsidered to determine how the redundant components must be used These strategiesare called active and standby strategies There are three variants of the standbyredundancy called cold warm and hot standby which the cold strategy is morepopular In this thesis a novel strategy that is a combination of traditional active andstandby strategies is introduced The new strategy is called mixed strategy which uses bothactive and cold standby strategies in one subsystem simultaneously Therefore theproblem is to determine the component type redundancy level number of active and cold standby units for each subsystem in order to optimize the object function s As theoptimization of RAP and RRAP belong to NP hard class of problems a modified geneticalgorithm GA and a NSGA II algorithm are developed to solve the proposed models To demonstrate the advantage of the new strategy and the proposed GA and NSGA IIalgorithms they are implemented on some well known test problems in the literature Results demonstrate that the new strategy increases the reliability value of the all thebenchmark problems considerably This improvement can be very important for systemdesigners because the reliability of any systems with the structure of redundantcomponents can be increased by changing the redundancy strategy not by onlyadding redundant component Moreover this improvement dose not increases the cost weight volume or other known physical characteristics of the systems Hence it seemsthat the new strategy can take place the two previous strategies in scientific and applicationstudies Keywords Reliability Redundancy Allocation Problem Reliability Redundancy AllocationProblem Redundancy strategy Mixed strategy Optimization
