135 Effects of underground water table on surface settlement curve due to mechanized excavation in urban areas Payam Alipanahi p ali@mi iut ac ir Date of Submission 2014 9 16 Department of Mining Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language PersianSupervisor Masoud Cheraghi cheraghi@cc iut ac irAbstractRapid growth in urban development has resulted with the congestion at the earth surface and increaseddemand for the underground construction subsequently Tunnels are an essential component of theunderground schemes and constitute one of the major parts of project expenditure Tunneling throughcities underlain by soft soil commonly associated with soil movement around the tunnels andsubsequent surface settlement The factors influencing ground movement include the geotechnicalconditions tunnel dimensions and construction method This research concerns tunnelling inducedground surface settlements in groundwater drawdown environment When tunnelling under thegroundwater table the tunnelling inevitably results in groundwater inflow into the excavated area thuscausing the groundwater drawdown Such a tunnelling induced groundwater drawdown inducesassociated settlements in addition to the settlement due to the excavation The related groundsubsidence occurring as a result of the reduction in water pressures in the soil layers can damagenearby structures utilities A numerical simulation has been developed for sensitivity analysis of soil movement around a tunneland surface settlement which includes various geotechnical conditions Geotechnical andhydrogeological parameters has been obtained from Tabriz Subway Tunnels that were excavated insoft cohesive soils below the groundwater level using earth pressure balance shield machines Thisresearch presents the sensitivity analysis which focuses on the soil properties and groundwaterconditions The results demonstrate that geotechnical and hydrogeological conditions significantlyaffect the surface and subsurface settlements KEYWORDS hydrogeological conditions Geotechnical conditions Soft soils Shield tunneling Surface and sub surface settlement
