Optimal Operation of a Virtual Power Plant Simultaneous with Participate in the Electricity Market Hassan Ebrahimi h ebrahimi@ec iut ac ir Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language PersianSupervisor Mohammad Esmail Hamedani Golshan hgolshan@cc iut ac irAdvisor Sayed Yaser Derakhshandeh y derakhshandeh@eng sku ac irAbstract Technical economic and environmental advantages of distributed generationsespecially renewable based ones has increased the installation of these sources in manypower systems By the high penetration of distributed generations in power system therewould be some new challenges for system operation Some these challenges are possibilityof changing power flow direction on some of distribution feeders non predictablerenewables output and difficulty of the DG direct participation into electricity market Thechallenges not only reduce motivation of DG owners for more investment but also thepotential of DG can not be completely exploited and a number of new problems are createdin power system operation Virtual power plant has been introduced as a new concept thatovercome the challenges and provide better exploiting DG merits VPP concept provides aplan for coordinated operation and management of DG on a geographic wide area Virtualpower plant is a set of controllable distributed units that each unit can include consumersor independent producers generation equipment controllable loads or energy storagesystems The VPP manager exploits units by using suitable communication infrastructure management softwares and operation algorithms to attain the maximum benefits and thebest system performance For this purpose designing the efficient operation algorithms hasa special importance for maximizing the profit of virtual power plant and other objects Accordingly the purpose of this thesis is to review the definitions and concepts of virtualpower plant and explore various aspects of that and also introducing some models provided for virtual power plant operation optimization Moreover in this thesis acomprehensive model for optimized operation of a large scale virtual power plant isproposed by integration and completion of the previous models In this model bysimultaneously considering of electrical and thermal loads and sources electrical andthermal energy storages different kind of distributed generations and electrical vehiclesand virtual power plant participate in both energy and reserve markets the profit ismaximized subjected to unit constraints and security constraint of system Thecomprehensive proposed model is formulated in two deterministic and stochastic framesand is tested on 33 bus distribution network test and the results are discussed Inprobabilistic programming the uncertainty in load forecasting and output power of solarresources are considered Keywords Virtual Power Plant Profit Optimization Probabilistic Programming
