92Influence of Zinc enriched Nanoparticles of Tire Rubber Ash ZNTRA on Growth Nodulation and Nitrogen Fixation of Microsymbiont of Alfalfa Farzane Javadi f javadi6887@gmail com January 4 2015 Departement of Soil Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisors Mozhgan Sepehri msepehri@cc iut ac irAmir Hossein Khoshgoftarmanesh amirhkhosh@cc iut ac irAbstractWorn tires of cars are considered as the most important pollutant sources of environment A newproposed approach to tire rubber disposal is recycling and applying it in the form of groundor ash in agriculture as a zinc containing fertilizer To better understand the possibility of usingthis waste materials as Zn fertilizer it is necessary to evaluate their effects on soil microbialpopulation i e alfalfa Rhizobium symbiotic relationship Nano particles of tire rubber ash ZNTRA wereproduced by ashing ground tire rubber at 550 C for 10 h The results showed that tire rubber ash containsabout 10 zinc and negligible levels of Cd and Pb The present research study consisted of two parts in the firstpart the effect of rubber ash on microbial activity of Sinorhizobium meliloti in two soils with different texturesi e clay loam and sandy clay loam was investigated In the second part the effects of ZNTRA as a sourceof zinc and Zn sulfate on some characteristics of alfalfa Medicago sativa plant inoculated with S meliloti were studied The results showed that addition of ZNTRA at the level of 125 mg kg in sandy clay loamsoil had toxic effects on S meliloti Soil microbial respiration was not affected by the presence of ZNTRA overtime and the number of bacteria remained constant at all levels of ZNTRA The resultsof microbial respiration and bacterium counts showed that toxic effects of ZNTRA in clay loam soil waslower than sandy clay loam soil Application of ZNTRA containing 125 mg L Zn had a negative effecton fresh mass of alfalfa plants inoculated with S meliloti It seems that the usage of ZNTRA with 125 mg LZn had toxic effect on S meliloti while applying Zn sulfate with 125 mg L Zn increased fresh mass of alfalfaplants inoculated with S meliloti The results indicate that in non inoculated conditions application of rubberash at the level of 125 mg L significantly increased shoot dry mass of alfalfa Increasing zinc concentration regardless of supplying source increased shoot and root Zn concentration and leaf chlorophyll content of thestudied plants inoculated and non inoculated The effect of ZNTRA on shoot nitrogen concentrationwas greater than zinc sulfate The results showed that application of ZNTRA improvedthe antioxidative capacity of alfalfa Keywords Rubber ash Sinorhizobium meliloti Respiration Alfalfa Zinc
