84 Experimental Investigation of the Influence of Friction Stir WeldingParameters on Tribological Properties of 7075 W Aluminum Alloy Joint Line Javad Bagheri Javad bagheri1@me iut ac ir Date of Submission 2015 02 01 Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisors Hasan Moosavi Moosavi@cc iut ac ir Alireza FadaieTehrani Mcjaft@cc iut ac irAbstract Aluminum and its alloys have wide range of applications in many industries due to low density goodcorrosion resistance and acceptable strength to weight ratio 7075 aluminum alloy has zinc as an importantalloying element and exhibit high mechanical strength as is comparable with steel This alloy has goodfatigue resistance and machinability but lower corrosion resistance than other aluminum alloys Strengthimprovement of this type of aluminum alloy is due to precipitation hardening mechanism and dropsignificantly during fusion welding methods which work in temperature range higher than meltingtemperature So in order to keep the primary properties of sample it is more interesting to use new solidstate welding methods Aluminum alloys with aerospace application already have shown low weldabilityusing conventional fusion welding procedures Friction stir welding is performed in the solid state high yieldprocess which has created new opportunities to be healthier and more reliable connections with the highwelding speed In this work the effects of two important FSW parameters on mechanical and tribologicalproperties of 7075 W aluminum alloy are investigated Samples were welded using FSW process at differentrotational and traverse speeds Mechanical properties of all samples were evaluated using tensile andmicrohardness tests In order to evaluate the wear behavior samples were tested using reciprocal wear testand scanning electron microscopy Results from tensile test have shown that yield strength and elongation isdecreased for welded sample compare to unprocessed raw material and it s more decreased with increasingtraverse speed at low rotational speed Wear behavior is evaluated by plotting reduced mass in terms ofdistance and results showed that wear resistance is decreased with increasing traverse speed at low rotationalspeed but increased with increasing traverse speed at high rotational speed SEM micrographs revealed thatcombined adhesive and abrasive mechanisms are dominant for 1500 rpm 60 mm min sample whiledelamination mechanisms is dominant for 1000 30 sample Key Words7075 aluminum alloy friction stir welding tribological properties
