    Nowadays,thereareahugenumberofautonomousanddiverseinformationsourcesprovidingheterogeneousdata.Sensors,socialmediadata,dataon the Web,opendata,justtonameafew,resultinginamajorconfluence ofBigData.Inthissurvey,wediscussthesediversedatasourcesanddetailthe wayinwhichdataareacquired,stored,processedandanalysed.Althoughsomeoftheopportunitiesinthisnewstatearementioned,themainobjective of thisanalysisistopresentthechallengesforBigData.Toaccomplishthisgoal,weexaminethenewproposalsandapproachespresentedinthisspecial issue withtheaimofestablishingnewmodelsforimprovingthemanagementofthevolume,velocity,andvariety,ofBigData.Someoftheseschemes establish theuseofOntologies,SemanticProcessing,CloudComputingandDataManagementandcouldbeseenasintelligentservicesintegratedas context-awareservices.
