Abstract :
There are many conflicts between river management and urban development. One of the serious problems in the Hawkesbury-Nepean River catchment in Australia is the conflict between river management and urban water supply. This river is also administered by a large number of agencies, which has led to conflicts about how the river can best serve the community, while sustaining its vital ecology. The diversity of these uses prsents a number of management issues. One of the most significant river management issues for the Hawkesbury-Nepean River basin is the expanding urban population of sydney. This issue is the source of many problems for the river system which need to be addressed by government policy. Guidelines need to be established for which developments should be allowed and the form of these developments. In this study, five different issues, namely sewage effluent, urban storm runoff, extractive industries, flow regulation and agricultural activities are considered as constiuting the major problems in this river basin. Some strategies such as Regional Centre Policy for managing the urbanisation in the Hawkesbury-Nepean River are proposed. Furthermore, strategies for river management are also prposed.
