Study on the michanical behaviour and failure mechanism of estabragh fibres in tensile loading

Abstract :
Estabragh (Asclepias Procerias) ia a natural hollow fibre that has been used in Iran for clothing long time ago. Despite the historical indications which show the used of these fibres in fabric form, there is a lack of knowledge in spinning and weaving process of stabragh fibres. Since the mechanical behaviour of the fibres plays a major role in mechanical processing such as spinning, this work aims at finding the mechanical behaviour of estabragh fibre under tensile loading and itʹs general tensile failure mechanism. The tenacity of the estabragh fibres have been assessed and the typical stress-strain curve of fibres has been plotted. Consequently the broken ends have been prepared for SEM examination. Fractography of the broken ends of estabragh fibres due to tensile loading by SEM shows the granular nature of the fracture. The likely mechanism of tensile failure is discussed and compared with the facture of cotton fibres under tensile loading. The effect of the hollowness of fibres on the mechanical properties of estabragh fibres is discussed as well.
