Abstract :
A series of complexes of the type trans-[Co(acacen)L***2].NCS, 1a-4a; trans-[Co(acacen)L***2]CIO***4, 1b-4b; and trans-[Co(acacen)(NCS)L], 1c-4c (where acacen is N,Nʹ- ethyenebis (acetylacetoneiminato) dianion; L = piperidine (pprdn), 1; benzylamine (bzlan), 2; morpholine (mrpln), 3, and pyrrolidine (prldn), 4,) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis and spectroscopic. The crystal and molecular structure of the complex trans-[Co(acacen)(pprdn)***2].NCS, 1a, was determined by X-ray crystallography. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinec space group P2***1/n, a = 9.643(3)A, c = 28.800(6)A, 3 = 96.96(2)A, V = 2443(1) A**3, Z = 4 and R = 4.05,and R***w = 4.57,for 4574 reflections (F***0 > 40 (F)). The (NCS)- group is neither coordinated to the cobalt(III) center nor acting merely as a counter ion, but it is hydrogen to one of the coordinated amines (i.e. Co-N-H....NCS). The observed v(CN) for the thiocyanate ion and v(N-H) for the amine ligands are also consistent with such an interaction. The 1***H NMR, IR and electronic spectra are also reported and discussed.
