Abstract :
This Bulletin examines the challenges facing family farms worldwide in the wake of national farm policy and the GATT agreements. It describes the important role of small family farmers in achieving global food security, conservation of natural resources, and viable rural communities. Proposals are made for a new relationship between governments, farmersʹ organizations and the private sector. Governments would focus on providing the policy, institutional and regulator frameworks, and basic rural infrastructure, while the farmersʹ organizations would have more responsibility for ensuring the development of local rural areas, following a participatory approach.
