This Bulletin discusses the effect of free trade under WTO on the future viability of family farms and the security of world food supplies. It suggests that the food production projections of FAO may be too optimistic, since they do not take into account the effect of possible unfavorable weather patterns and changes in food conumption. It points out that family farms make a contribution, not only to the national economy, but to society, by matintaining traditions and the rural environment. It suggests that a new system is needed for world agricultural trade, and that farmersʹ cooperatives should make an active effort to promote the farmersʹ point of view.
