Abstract :
The purpose of this study is to investigate the economic feasibility of implementing a scheme to control the outflow of ghanats in Iran. The scheme saves an average of 34,000 m**3 of water per ghanat each year during the months when there is no agricultural activity. The water saved will be used for imigation purposes later. The cost of implementation of the scheme is compared with those of two other altermatives; the construction of new ghanats and the excavation of new wells to provide the same amount of water saved by the scheme. The results indicate that obtaining the saved amount of water by this scheme costs 877 and 26 times less than is required by the production of a new ghanat and a nwe well, rewpectively. On the basis of these results, application of the scheme to 25,of those existing ghanats in Iran that are technically suitable is strongly recommended.
