Water Footprint s Scenarioes Assessment of Isfahan Province HaniyeNilforoushan h nilforoushan@na iut ac ir Date of Submission 17January 2015 Department of Natural Resoursces Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree MSc Language Persian Supervisor Dr AlirezaSoffianian email soffianian@cc iut ac ir Abstract Increasing demand and severe limitations on water resources in arid and semi aridcountries and developing countries and achieve sustainable development in these areasmakes it difficult Sustainable development as a strategy to meet human needs alwaysemphasize the potential and the capacity of the land so that ecosystems are protected InIsfahan province restrictions on water resources due to population growth and economicdevelopment and the subsequent increase in demand for drinking industry and agriculturein particular and also located in the arid and semi arid climate and lack of rainfall is due tothe recent drought and this is the extent of damage to natural resources includingdegradation of river and ecosystems of Gavkhooni wetland picked up the static storage inaquifers and ground subsidence plains entered is clear Rethinking Water managers fromsupply management to demand management is an important step to address the watercrisis The need to review the integrated water resources management finding newresources and using an integrated management approach based solutions have beenproposed to prevent the crisis in the water sector Recently an index so called waterfootprint representing total water consumption in the target community directly orindirectly has paved the way for investigation in the modern environmental friendly waterresources management In this study eight management scenarios were developed basedon descriptive analytical method in terms of upstream documents strategies on water andenvironment as well as evaluating historical trends on water resources and consumptions inthe Isfahan province In each scenario water footprint the biological potential andecological deficit was calculated and finally a superior scenario was selected so that it canmeet environmental demands of Zayandehrood and Gavkhooni wetland to make balancebetween them as well as obviating water scarcity for different sectors in future Keywords Water Footprint Carrying Capacity Ecological Deficit Water ResourceManagement Sustainable Development Scenario Assessment Isfahan Province
